A few days ago I posted a thread mentioning the fact that I ordered an Alaskan Guide 110 in S30V from Cabela's. It arrived on my doorstep yesterday.

I never really liked the 110. The styling was too old fashioned for my tastes. After a while it grew on me. I guess you could say that I no longer find the knife's looks old fashioned, but classic. So when I received a gift certificate for Cabela's I knew immediately what I wanted. All the pictures I've seen here piqued my interest, especially Vasili's.

I've only had it for a day, so I won't be commenting on the knife's performance. Doing so would probably be unnecessary, due to the fact that most people are probably familiar with it. However, I can tell you my impressions of it.

When I took it out of the box, I was impressed. This is one hefty knife. I'm not sure, but I think it may be my heaviest folder. This thing seems like it's heavier than either my CUDA Maxx or my Microtech LCC, and those knives are no lightweights.

Fit and finish on this knife is excellent. The bolster to scale transition is seamless. It might be just a tad under my first generation LCC, and the LCC was more than twice the price of the 110 (or three times if you compare MSRPs). The fit and and finish on my 110 at least puts other knives in its price point to shame.

The blade on this knife is excellent. All the bevels are nice and even, including the false edge. The knife is nice and sharp. And while the edge is more coarse than I like, that problem is easily remedied. A little time with my strop should polish up the edge and bring it to hair-popping sharp.

However, the coating on the blade is another matter. I don't know if I like it. It looks a little out of place on the 110. Furthermore, the spine of the blade doesn't have the coating, so it looks incomplete somehow. The logo doesn't look that good either. It's already starting to come off in places. I don't mind though, as I don't like it. I'm hoping that it comes off totally.

The sheath that came with the knife was a nice touch. It's leather, in a burgundy-ish color, I think. What do you think about storing the 110 in this sheath? While doing so may protect the knife, it may be a bad idea since it could tarnish the bolsters.

All in all this was an excellent deal. The Alaskan Guide 110 is a best buy and has incredible bang for the buck.

Sounds like a nice knife!!!

If you are going to use it, then sheath it. If you are going to store and use as a collectable then I would not sheath it.

The leather sheaths on my 110's and 112's will put a green patina on the bolsters after a while. But a little Brasso cleans them right up.
