Cabela's Bowie

More then likely 420 series steel. Would not hold a edge well and would be considered by many (almost everyone) cheap/crappy steel for a knife in general. Looks nice.

If this isn't a good bowie, what's the minimum price I could pay for a good one? Not necessarially a nice-looking one, but one that could take a lot of abuse? Any suggestions?

Check out the Becker stuff. It may not be what you are looking for but they tend to be alot of knife for the money. It is hard to say about a minimum price. A Becker is alot cheaper then many knives that it can compete with, in terms of taking abuse, but is pretty cheap price wise. Go over to the Makers & Manufacturers Forums then to the Camillus Forum, you can find alot there on the various knives. I have the Bk7 and BK9 and have been very happy with them.

If I were to take a trip down to my local cutlery store, what kind of quality could I expect in a bowie? I mean, could I find a solid knife, or a just a cool Crocadile Dundee wannabee knife?

FWIW, I see that the knife is made by "Coast". If that's Coast Cutlery, there is a very good chance it's 440-c.
IIRC, Coast has switched most of their fixed blades to 440-c awhile back.
At $39.99 it might be well worth a little more research.

All the best,
Mike U.

welcome to the world of coast cutlery, $40.00? save your money, it could be better spent. If you want a bowie buy one of the western w49's it will be money better spent. Just my opinion (in my experience)

Go for the Becker Bowie 9. It is a good buy. Solid, strong and reliable.
