Cabelas M390 Knives

I don't think Hogue uses any M390 currently. Not that they couldn't for a contract but...

Someone on reddit claimed Bear and Son was the maker for these but I didn't find anything else to corroborate that either.

There's no country of origin listed. The Italian knife makers use a lot of M390 and I see their M390 fixed blade knives of a similar size priced in a similar price range at various on-line stores. They also commonly produce special factory orders for various outfits, Cold Steel and Spyderco among them.
So I would guess Lionsteel or MKM

Good idea on the Italians. I have a couple Lionsteel M390s but didn’t think about them.

The blade has "USA" etched on it. Pretty good price for M390 if made in US. At least the sale price. Good handle and blade proportions and G10 is better than plastic that you see on a lot of this style of knife. Overall I'm impressed with the value here. The caper is just over $100 as well.

Get it. Easily my fav steel. Just clean it up after some use and a strope every week or so (if you use it daily / a lot). 2000 diamond cleans it well and I use green rouge on a leather strope. 20CV is very similar.

Pretty sure M390 is damn near identical to 20CV, at least in terms of composition. I’d recommend a much lower grit diamond plate though in case u need to do any real sharpening. 2000 grit might be enough for cleaning up the edge and touching up the blade from time to time, but in my experience M390 tends to be a bit of a pain to sharpen when it’s properly heat treated, and reprofiling can take a while. I’d suggest also getting at least a 400-600 grit, depending how u like your edge (mirror polish vs toothy edge, each has its own pros and cons depending on the steel and blade geometry).
