I'm interested in possibly purchasing a Buck knife with the S30V steel from Cabela's. I need some first hand advice on these knives. Are they worth the extra $$$?

S30V is a nice steel and thats a great price for a knife of that quality. Take a look at the CPM 154 CM ones at Bass Pro as well, steel is in the same caliber, but it doesn't have the picture on the blade like the Cabelas knife.

I for one think so. It is a substantial improvement in performance over their standard 420HC.

I have the vanguard from Cabellas. I love it. It is a significant improvement over the 420HC in edge retention, but it is a booger to get sharp.

Also, I don't care for the coating on the blade--but that is just personal preference.

How so? I have a Mini-Rukus in S30V and it sharpens easily on DMT hones. Different maker of course, but the same steel and one would think very similar heat treat.

I think you said it all here when you mention using DMT hones. Diamond stones are not going to have much problems even with the 61 rockwell hardness of S30V. I don't have any diamond stones myself, and 60+ rockwells take a lot of work with my stock sharpmaker stones.

Hi abey67,

If you do a search of this forum you will see quite a few threads about the cabelas AG's in S30V. I say go out and get one ASAP:thumbup: . You will not be sorry at all. I bought one this year just before hunting season; it's been the only knife on my side ever since (Feild dressed and skinned out 4 bucks and then capped out one before I touched up the edge). Not bad performance.....I usually have to touch up an edge after each deer!!!! I have no problem getting a razor sharp edge on mine with the Lansky set.

Welcome to the BF Buck forum ;)

Hi Ed,

I think you should try out the Buck heat treatment and judge for your self. Your Mini-Rukus would do much better with the BOSS heat treatment process. But, you need to be the judge of that. I think you will be surprised at what a difference it is. Remember Ed, a knife by any other name is just a knife; a Buck is the only knife you'll ever need because it's built to last you a life time.

Just one of the Buck nuts here:D

The Cabela's AG logo is easy to remove, if that bugs you. Some of the guys here did it and could tell you how.

In my opinion, the Alaskan Guide 110 is definitely worth the extra money.
The S30V performs wonderfully and I can get it extremely sharp...certainly sharper than my standard 110.
And the cherrywood scales look awesome with the brass!
And I like the dark blade too.

You will be hard pressed to find a better deal in the knife industry. :)

Good luck,
Allen

I sharpen with a mousepad and sandpaper. It takes a while to get the edge convexed--I am sure once I get there, it will touch up quickly. I have to say, though, it is really tough steel.

You won't regret the purchase of either one, or both.
Have three 110AG knives. One of my favorite trophy wife Bucks is my 110AG Stag. One of my favorite EDC 110 knives is a 110AG Cherry.

Here's a pic of a AG and a BP:

All right, all right....

I just recently ordered a custom 110 in BG42 (hasn't gotten here yet) and now you folks are pushing me towards the S30V from Cabelas.

I own a number of S30V knives and the Cabelas 110 by Buck definitely comes in at a sweet price for this steel. And I've shopped around enough to know that most of Cabelas prices are not too sweet.

Oder one today Plowboy,

You can jump off your tractor and dig some taters with your S30V 110 and it will still be sharp ;) :p . I already gave this knife two thumbs up. I also gave it a grate review at Cabelas also!!!! The S30V will hold an edge as well as the BG42 and is just a little better for rust resistance.

Well, since I climb off the tractor every-now-and-again, I'll see if I can get one ordered. I actually have a $15 off coupon form Cabela's if I order $150 worth of stuff...Guess I'll have to get a couple. :D

And as to those taters, Momma (the wife) sure does cook em up good.

Sounds good to me; what should I show up for some ;) . If you oder one in stag and one in wood your covered for the $150.

Jb,

come on over anytime for some taters, cornbread and a big glass of buttermilk.

Just be sure to bring that .45-70 with you....I'd like to shoot it out here behind the house.

Okay, enough sidetracking by me.

:)
