Cable damascus dagger

Here is a dagger I made out of several strands of cable I got from Home Depot. The steel seemed really soft when I was working it, so I'm sure the cable was not high carbon steel or anything. I was just in the store and saw they had a length of scrap from the end of a roll laying to the side. I figured I'd see what I could do with it. They essentially gave it to me.

I took 6 strands of it and welded the ends together. I then heated, fluxed, and hammered it until it was solidly welded. I folded it one time and fluxed and welded that. I then formed it into the dagger shape. I acid etched the blade and sanded it with 600 grit sandpaper. The handle is oak wood with a layer of leather on each side.

Looks like your weld was much better than mine. I got your message, give me a little bit on that. Cutting some tomorrow and I'll see what I got left.

Well I have about 100' of it that I dropped off at my dads but only had 4' at my house that I already cut up and promised to someone else. I'll cut some more eventually, just have to be patient with me

Blade and forging of the damascus are excellent.

I feel the handle doesn't do the blade justice. It is to plain and looks a bit unfinished, and is not a shape match. It most of all needs some sort of bolster or small guard. You don't want your fingers to slide forward on a double edged sharp blade.

I would have welded a piece of mild steel to the billet and made a full tang knife. Grind the blade so the weld is about 1" past the front of the handle scales. This would have allowed the standard double choil for the fingers you see on most daggers.

A bit of shaping of the handle is the rst of the package.

Thanks! When I talk to people who are not into knife making, they are somewhat surprised when I tell them that making the handle is often the most complicated part.
