Anyone know how cable damascus compares to O1 as a knife material?

Is it mainly for looks or does it perform well too?

Properly handled from the welding to the forging and heat treat of the blade.....cable can make one of the best cutting blades you can make.

I read somewhere that Michael Bell....who makes some of the most traditional Japanese blades available by a Westerner....uses cable for his katanas that will actually be used for cutting competitions etc.

Versus O1.....O1 can be one of the best edge holding steels you can have...but cable can perform right up there with it.

Good cable ranges from 1084 to 1095 depending on its grade.

We use a lot of both. With proper HT They cut outstanding. The cable just has that snake skin look.

Anyone have any ideas for a good source for high carbon cable? How would you know other than bringing up to critical, quenching and snapping in a vice?

THANKS!

Wow, awesome quick response. He's also got more stuff I need like the platen liner and refractory cement. Thanks.
