I have access to lots of rusty, but sound logging cable in the landings leftover from logging operations in my area. Are these usable to forge cable damascus. Is the rusty condition a problem? Most of the cable is from 3/4" to 1 1/4" in diameter and in lengths from 10 to several hundred feet.

The bigger cable imo is better because the
strands are bigger and seems to retain the carbon better and not burn as quickly as the
smaller cable seems to. Wayne Goddard has
booklet out that gives a good description
on making cable knives in fact I think he
has a video to go with it.

Don't walk in tradition just because it feels good!!!!!

Before you forge out the cable be sure to harden one strand and be sure that the carbon content is high enough to harden. simply bring to nonmagnetic and quench in oil. Hit with hammer to shatter or bend to see if it snaps.
Good Luck and feel free to contact me with any questions. Site at http://www.mastersmith.com
