I’m a stock removal maker that loves cable Damascus. I plan on getting set up for forging in the next couple years but in the mean time would really like to make a couple cable Damascus knives. I’ve done some searching and cannot find a source for cable billets. Wondering if any of you have a source or would be interested in making me a couple billets. High temp tools has improved plow steel cable for sale that I could purchase and drop ship. I have a surface grinder so roughed out billets will work.

Please no direct sales talk or prices. Just looking to find a source or make a connection and then take it off line. Feel free to send me a pm or email if interested.

Thanks.

Stacy, trying to follow the rules. I know there is a services wanted section but it does not get much traffic. Striving to keep sales talk out of this thread. If it has to be moved I understand.

A possibility is to visit a local smith and talk them into helping you make some. If you were closer I'd invite you to my shop. I haven't really seen wire rope billets for sale either. One thing is that I've had hit and miss results with wire rope. It's a love/hate relationship for me, get everything welded up, start final grinding and there's a huge flaw. Or not. The closer you forge to shape, the less chance of a flaw. On wire rope, the outside welds first, so generally any flaws will be in the center.

Matthew, I have made a lot of cable Damascus. If you send me some cable and return postage I will be glad to forge weld it for you. I like to help people out and won't charge you anything. Right now it is too hot in my forge but maybe by November it will be cool enough.
If you don't want to wait that long I understand.

Tom, incredibly generous offer and I will take you up on it. No hurry at all. I will get some cable on order and send to you with return postage. Thanks.

Matthew, I like 1 1/4" diameter cable. Also be sure the cable does NOT have any rubber, fiber, etc. in it. It must be all steel. A piece 8" long will fit in a small flat rate box. Just be sure and have it padded so the Post office won't be able to damage the box.
A 8" long piece of cable will give enough steel for several knives.
You can look at my web site, Lewis-knives to get my e-mail, address, etc.

Sounds good Tom. I will get a piece out to you in the next few weeks and include return postage. Maybe a nice piece of wood as well ;).

Tom is going to help me out so I am closing this thread.
