I noticed several of ya'll were looking for the cable lock. When I was in Wally World I did look at one. I walked out with the new 24OTX and a 8OT if that tells you anything. I was not particularly fond of the feel and finish of the one I looked at. I hope that was just that particular knife. I'm sure I'll look again and it will probably grow on me and I'll add it to my collection.

Hello Bauer,
Thanks for the input on the Cable Lock.
The local Super WalMart didn't have them last week......Maybe the Pony Express hadn't arrived yet. :(

I actualy bought a Cable Lock. First the good. I realy like the pocket clip design. Normaly I hate them, but this one actualy worked for me. It allows the knife to ride totaly in the pocket with only the clip showing. The clip dosen't get in the way when using the knife either. The clip fits in a slot in the rear of the handle and is held in place with torx screws. Shrade gives you a driver, a lefthand friendly clip and an insert that you can use if you don't want a clip. The knife was comfortable to use and I like the blade shape.

Now the bad. I don't trust the lock at all. A couple of light wacks on the spine and it disengaged. I don't think it was a problem with my particular knife either. Everything looked like it was working the way it should. I have slipjoints that are more resistant to spine whacks. The lock should hold for most cutting tasks, but then so will my slip-joints. Kind of disapointing for what Schrade calls ...

This newly designed lock is one of the safest and strongest available, providing the user with a cutting tool he can count on.

To top it off, I lost the thing. Left it in a hotel room. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the review. I still haven't seen one, but I'm losing interest a bit, based on the input here. :(
Maybe our new Schrade Guy (Schrade Web Guy Steve) will chime in here with some information.
Anyway, thanks to both of you for your input.

Bill

Thanks guys. Thank you very much. I was one here that was downright eager to get one, trusting our favorite knfie company to do it right. It's lost a bit of it's luster for me now. I'd still like to handle and look at one, but I won't be sending off mail order for one sight-unseen.

I do like the idea of a pocket clip that works, and just as nice, one that is removable with an insert to make it look good. I'd hate to have one close on my hand, though.

What's the price on these at Wally World?

Phil

The cable lock seems to me like a good idea that can be made right, I´ve used wire gate carabiners and think they are great. I wish Schrade gets this one right, there´s some very tough competition in the "tactical" market and I feel Schrade hasn´t being as good as it can be.

I wouldn´t care too much for these modern knives if it wasn´t because I think they can be good for Schrade and it´s a market that they cannot afford to ignore.

If I wanted a new Schrade folder (actually I always do) it would probably be a rebirth of their two bladed Barlows or their rigging knives (for my knot tying you know), but surely I am not representative of the general consumer.

Wow.
I am truely sorry to hear about the bad knives. The design for the cablelock is somewhat of a new thing for us and we did have some 'issues' initially in production. While I can't go into specifics, all I can say is that certain deadlines for certain giant chain stores occasionally affect our releasing/not releasing of items sometimes. We of course would never release anything defective or unsafe, but the missing a deadline of that nature right now could prove a lethal mistake for us. So we had to push production time up to accomodate this certain giant chain store.

The designer of the knife is currently raising holy hell with everyone here to improve a few things with the knife which aren't yet perfect. (better blanking process for the blade, better tolerances on locking mechanism, better handle construction, etc.)

I have used two versions of the knife:
Current standard version: which is just fine for most everyday usage.
Refined version: which we are working on presently: This is a work of art, it is everything that could be hoped for in the design. Truely graceful. THough it's not my favorite design (my fav is the 25OT) I like the thing.

The moral of the story. The guy who invented it is presently kicking ass to get everything mentioned here cleared up. Give it a couple months, and the next batch will be out. I will let everyone here know when it does.

Its good to hear that an improved version will be coming out. I understand about deadlines. I've worked for a few companies that put out products before they were ready for the same reason. I really did want to like this knife. Tactical style knives normaly aren't my thing, but this one appealed to me. I'll keep an eye out here and check them out again after the new batch goes out.

Just a couple more not so good things I didn't mention in my first post. The finish on the blade was a bit rough and the edge was HORRIBLE. The grind was uneven and incomplete; the knife wasn't actualy sharp. The bevels didn't meet. I looked at a couple of others at Walmart and they had the same problem. Didn't mention these points before, because to me they aren't that critical. I always sharpen knives after I buy them and a rough finish is easly taken care of with some sanding. With a bit of work the knife took a good edge and held it well. Just mentioning these points now because you said Schrade is working on refining the design.

We're not re-designing, so much as finishing the quality assurance of the design we have. the inbalanced hollow grind and poor edge should never have made it out of the factory though.... That was a major mistake in inspecting.

You know what. I'm going to be quite honest here. Alot of our staff isn't working up to full potential right now. Reason being that noone here is sure if we are going to have a job next month or not. Despite the managers best efforts to tell everyone that financial backing is coming, and that we will endure this slump noone on the floor here is sure what is going to happen. and EVERYTHING has suffered. We're on deaths doorstep. And everyone here is feeling it and fighting hard to avoid it. I've never seen everyone working this hard before. It's a strange time here in Ellenville. If we survive this summer our '05 lineup will be MUCH better than our '04. You can be sure of that.

Anywho on a less morbid note. assuming all goes according to plan and we are still in business 2-3 months from now, all those little glitches will be gone from the cablelocks. I will let you know when they are ready!

Many many years ago I worked in Quality Control and I remember things like this, I got into arguments with production managers more than once, I´ve heard the comment "we´ll ship as is and fix it when the customer brings it back", I really hated that.

My mom used to say, before you buy check out three and get the best one, if none is good, forget about it.

I hope all gets solved. If I ever see the Cable Lock in Mexico I´ll chek out three.

Steve,

It goes without saying a lot of folks not in Ellenville hope you survive this slump. Best wishes and thanks for your responsiveness in this forum.
