Hey Everybody!
I have been out of the loop and haven't finished anything in a long time. Thankfully the Fire and Brimstone Hammer-in gave me a real motivation to finish some things up. Here is one of them.

A little San Mai Tanto.

OAL: 11.25" (with sheath) 10.5" (knife only)
Blade Length: 6"
Blade: Cable/1075 san mai blade
Fittings: Wrought iron, copper, stabilized manzinita burl, and tiger maple, secured by a brass pin

The knife will fully disassemble when the brass pin is removed. The tiger maple was treated with resin to seal it, then the whole knife was treated with Tung oil for a semi-gloss finish.

Please let me know what you think. If I can find some-one to split a table with at Blade show (in June) then i will have it with me, otherwise it will be going up for sale soon. This is my favorite tanto mounting so far. i am very happy with it.

excellent work, Chris:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:
I'm loving my PEEK knife and use it all the time, keeps an edge like none other!

This piece of san mai came off the bad end of a long san mai billet. The good stuff is in a wakizashi that will be done in the next few weeks. It has better cable, better balance, and a much better hamon. very excited to polish it.

thanks!

I got to see this piece first hand this past weekend. Pictures don't do it justice, it's really a great piece. The mountings in particular are just fantastic. I imagine it'll make somebody really happy...

Hey, great work, Chris !
Good to see ya' posting here.
Very cool tanto, I really like it.

You said to let you know what we think, so..
Is the hamon a little close to the edge ?

Still enjoying my DI and damascus drop point bowie.
Thanks and don't be such a stranger around here.

hey
thanks for the critique! yes, the hamon is close to the edge. Certainly closer than i would like, however, the edge was sound, and rather than risk breaking the blade by heat treating it over again, i just went with it. The blade was water quenched. still learning there. my heat treating is getting more consistent, and i am constantly experimenting.

thanks for the critique. glad to hear about the knife!
thanks again!

everything looks great except -- why use two different woods? particularly why use the light wood for the largest part of the product? Visually, it would be better to keep all the wood the same or at worst make the handle light and the sheath dark.

as to why, because thats what i had. I didnt have enough of the burl to do the whole thing, so i thought i would tie in the sheath with the throat and cap. i would have liked to do it like the Slobodian's tantos, but i didnt have that much stabilized wood.

i do appreciate the critique though. i will take it into account next time.
thanks!
