Cable sources for damascus

check the yellow pages in your area for wire rope, there might be a suplier.

also, cut offs from rigging companies are usually a good source and can run up to 1 1/2 inches in diameter. you can find them through crane listings, or look for a Ironworkers union, many riggers belong to that union

if you are from a northern state, sometimes logging companies and papermills have cut offs lying around.

the last source I can think of would be a large steel warehouse, they may or may not list cable in their catalogs, but can often order it.

The cable George has is really good stuff. Him and Joe gave me a bunch of it, I've been using it for quite awhile now. Really good results.

I get the cable I use from Mine Supply in Carlsbad. If you don't live close to a cable supplier, you can get it from Sheffield Knifemakers Supply . They have 1 1/4 diameter double improved plow Steel.

I've got quite a bit of cable in various sizes, from 7/8" to 1 7/8". All is extra extra improved plowshare steel from Union Wire Rope. All of it is used and in need of cleaning before welding. I'll be glad to let you have some for the cost of the shipping. The 1 7/8" cable is drilling line from a drilling rig and is made up of really large individual wires on the outside strands (nearly 1/8") with a core of smaller wires. You can get some interesting pattern from drilling line because of the different sizes of wires in the same piece of cable. I'll have access to plenty of 1 3/8" drilling line soon, also. I'll be in your area in October and will be glad to bring you some then, if you want to wait that long.

Todd - if you could swing on up to Missouri to drop some off while you're at it, I'd appreciate it. ;) :D

I'd be glad to bring you some if I were coming that way! The offer is open to anyone, though. I'll be glad to send anyone some for the cost of shipping. I'll have access to several hundred feet of 1 3/8" drilling line in the next few weeks. It's extra extra improved plowshare steel from Union wire Rope ( I'm pretty sure, but it could be Bethlehem Steel Co.) that is used and needs to be unplaited and some plastic removed before welding.

You may want to try places that have any kind of hoisting equipment too. I used to work on heavy plant for a Landfill company. We used dragline cranes and had all kinds of slings hanging around (cable). Although it dosent get changed as oftenas you may htink I remember there being bits of it here and there in the back of the shop.

Definitely Todd, I'm not in a particular hurry owing to a remodel we are doing on our home, so Octover will be good for me...I'll subscribe to this thread so I can keep track of ya!

Mike Roesch
