I used my CABS yesterday to carve the turkey because eI could not find my carver. This was the first time Iv'e used this CABS. I washed the knife afterwards by hand using dish soap and after I dried it I noticed the scales look faded. What's up?

Did they turn a dark brownish color on the edges? Black paper micarta will do this. I actually love the look myself.

^ Therein lies the problem. :) Oil, either from your skin via handling or manual application, will restore the moisture required for the dark black appearance. Micarta is more prone to the dried out look than G10 but it can happen to both. It's all good. :p

I tried it with a paper towel. THat would cause this? That's strange. So the oils from my hands would restore it but what else could I apply to it for instant luster?

Mineral oil will work pretty good and it's food safe. Just don't drink to much of it unless your stopped up. :D

Canvas Micarta is more porous than most others and will lighten after washing. Especially with dishsoap as it will clean oils and such out of it. Body oils (from use) and mineral oil are both the best ways I've found to darken Micarta. Nowadays I just get Black G10. If not an option I just send it in for retrofit.

If you want the scales to be shiny, you can put a light coating of cooking oil or mineral oil on them. This makes them a little slick. I have had better luck using liquid shoe polish or just brushing them with my shoe brush. There's enough wax left over to put a shine on them, without leaving them slick. I've also used a giant Sharpie to give them a dark flat black color. These finishes won't last forever and will have to be re-applied. This being said, the more you handle ane use it, the sweat and oils from your hands will darken them.

Been using mineral oil for years... even G10 comes alive with a little application.

I leave mine stored in a leather sheath, and every time I pull it out it is like that.

I don't mind, as I feel it makes it more grippy.

really, any kind of oil will work, I would only use a food safe oil for mine as I use it for food prep.
