So me and a couple buddies decided to take a dayhike up on the Mogollon Rim. We departed from Phoenix and within 2 hours had passed from sand and cacti to snow and evergreens. We go to this spot regularly and usually spend a few days there processing wood, watching Indian TV, eating, listening to the wind and doing a whole lotta nothing. Plus solve all universal problems. So here are a few shots from last Friday, Dec 30.

On the way there

This is what the campsite looked like when we got there.

Getting to some dry wood. Yes this is why we bring an axe or a knife heavy enough to baton with.

The cutlery team. The benchmade is temporary until Bryan gets my 2 customs done. Go Bryan!!!!

Is there anything better than a Braut cooked over the fire with some mustard?

Being good boys and putting the fire dead out before leaving. It was a good trip. No casualties.

Love that area! Been there many times including the summer months. The closer to sleep near the RIM, the harder the breeze is!

Nope West Texas too and Southern New Mexico and and Yes Colorado, lots of cactus and snow.

Good point. I'm originally from Washington State where the evergreens grow very tall. Here in AZ a full sized Saguaro can be 10 miles from some pretty tall evergreens like hemlock and ponderosa pine. Got those in west Texas?

Well I am currently in Colorado but the last time I was in West Texas, like zero trees but we have alot of Pine here in Colorado, Pikes Peek is full of them.

Really true Rick. Love Colorado. Hey what do you think of my cutlery suite, esp the axe and saw? The saw is from Home Depot and it is light yet still goes through 8" oak with no problems. I take it or its slightly smaller brother with me when I backpack. The Estwing is not a great splitter but it does the job, plus I can use 2 hands or one if I want. I only take it on short trips due to the weight.

Set up looks good and as long as it works for you, eastwing has a smaller version of that axe, I looked at it the last time I was in home depot, I may pick one up.

Yes, the smaller version would definitely be lighter and would work for longer hikes. That saw though is a monster. I'm a bit surprised I don't ever hear of folks using it. The little things just don't have the horsepower for me.

and once again. Arizona is the &%it.

Cool trip. I'm shocked that you and your buddy aren't dead from wearing cotton. Cotton kills you know. ;):D

I got to toss snowballs into the Canyon at South Rim- I love the high desert and pray I get back there some day.

All 3 of us like mustard. Yeah I know................

Ah the age old back and forth on cotton. Just got a couple of wool sweaters which is my favorite. I usually bring a Columbia fleece and my Helly-Hanson breathable shell................and a heavy cotton hoody. Ha! Our hike into this place is a whopping 1.75 miles. Just about right:thumbup:

Why did you spoil the brat wih mustard?
I put mustard AND ketchup on my brats. :D

Yeah I'm not a hard liner on cotton either. Heck I'm going camping tomorrow and plan on wearing cotton pants as well.

Thanks for the pics. I hope to make it to AZ one day. I don't like the heat that much, but I do know that there is snow there.
