First off what the HE!! - where's the sheath:D - no worries it's in the works!
Secondly I hadn't really planned on posting these pics - they were to show my knife building partner Gib (CactusForge + Wild Rose = Cactus Rose) how this collaboration piece looked at this stage.
Yesterday I had just finished up the holster in the background for a customer and while taking pictures of it thought it might make a good backup for the Bowie. One of the images (a version of the first pic) just grabbed me and I decided I'd like to enter in the CKDF photo contest. So off to Gib it went. He agreed and then this morning we decided we'd give everybody a view.
The history: Gib sent me the blade (forged 5160 with his rustic finish) a while back along with the stag crown (and several other blades - oh where oh where is the time to do it all :D).
I'd been too busy filling leather orders to work on it - but a couple of weeks ago I was getting burnt out on leather work and got the jones to get this sucker hafted. So I went into the shop and went to work. I shaped and file worked the guard, and then in Plains Indian style wrapped the grip with rawhide (I'd been looking at an original Bowie carried by Sitting Bull that had such a wrap), added some brass tacks, and then for the final touch I put a custom nickel concho on the butt. After I got the grip done I decided the blade needed some period filework too so I wound up adding a bit on the spine and the choil. Of course then it needed an aged etch so...
Anyway here's what it wound up looking like. Hope you have as much fun looking at it as I had working on it.

Man is that WAY cool! That steps right out of a time capsule. Kudos to you and Gib, Chuck!

W:eek:W Chuck, I really like the work you've done on this knife; a great effort. Kudos, also to Gib to on a great blade. Thanks for posting all these fabulous photos, always love to see them.
Regards,
Greg

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I believe we've found the poster knife for the term "rustic elegance".

Very well done fellas.

All the best,
Mike U.

Beautiful knife and leather work. You two are a real team. Makes me want to build something showy just so I can get you to make a sheath for it!;)

Thanks guys - and Peter anytime - I'd be honored.

MIsque - I'm working on getting some of these photos done up into posters and probably a calendar - once I get my butt in gear (in my spare time that is :D) I'll post and let ya'll know.

Gib sure has that rustic finish down pat,Nice work on the handle looking forward to see the sheath, and excellent photography...

Man I really was born 150 yrs too late! That is fantastic gents, thanks for making my day.

Please keep me on your list for when you get your calendar going, I will need a couple. Hmmm... 2004 might be hoping for a bit too much, eh? ...

Beautiful work gents, you are inspiring.

Dave

Oh Man!! You guys are making me jealous. I got to make myself a Bowie. I hope I can make one that is close to that beauty.:) :) :)

It really does look like you took something straight out of time. Great work, everything goes together nicely. Thanks for sharing it.

Dave- Not sure about 2004 - have to see if I've got enough pics yet for that - hmm could do a mix of Frontier knives/sheaths and Old West gun rigs maybe - 6 of each????

Jeff and Bill - I liked that concho too :D that finishing touch you might say. Although I make many of my own this particular one is part of a pair (the other ones going on the sheath) that a silversmithing friend made - it's nickle not sterling though. He was fooling around with the style and I got them as "throw aways" :D :D

Chuck my first reaction was selfish - "Do it!" But I think sticking to the knife theme would be better. I guess I'll suck it up and be "willing" to wait...

But wait! That's being selfish too! I'd love to see some of your holster work too, I bet that just kicks bloody A.

Well, count me a supporter for multiple calendars whenever you do them. I think all my friends should look at knives all year too. :D

Dave

Well Dave the gun rig in the above pic is one of mine.
here's another - my personal favorite - an early (1850-60's)frontier Slim Jim for a percussion revolver with a tack belt and pouch:

And another - an 1880's full carved Mexican loop rig with a money belt

Both knives are graymaker's Bowie repros.
