A sneak peek of the next one -

Blade: 7" Dag of handforged 5160 by Gib Guignard
Grip: Deer bone (thanks Ray) with a rawhide "bolster" and Montana rattle snake wrap. Horsehair dangle with hawk bell and bead wrap.

Sheath: in the works - stay tuned.

Although I am swamped with a bunch of gun rigs to get out I just had to take a break.

Oh that is SWEEET! Just out of curiosity, is it typical to stabilize deer bone? If so, is it done in the same manner as wood? Thanks.

Tim

Tim -
Since I make everything to look as close as possible to the originals I use the materials of the day as would have been used 150-200 years ago. (I confess to using epoxy in my weaker moments - actually more when it is just better to use and I do use contact cement, sparingly, in my leather work.) After artificially "aging" the bone or antler or wood I soak it in linseed oil or use thinned out pine pitch to seal the bone. I normally use cutlers resin (pitch, bees wax, and ash) to mount the blade which completely fills the void.

Frankly I personally dislike stabilized wood and as Mike Hull said a while back - knife handles have been around for thousands od years and stabilizing has been around for 20 years or so. Still lots of old knives in existence with their unstabilized handles.

Should one stabilize? It's up to you, but a bunch of the collector's who buy "period" pieces want them as authentic - methods as well as materials - as possible (some get REAL anal about using only coal fired forges, etc, etc, etc) and since they are paying the big bucks....:D

Chuck,

I think if you were looking for a "period" piece you hit the nail on the head with this one. I've admired your work for sometime but this knife is absolutley fantastic.

Geoff

Cool, Chuck. You two have quite the collab. series going....

That is a gorgeous knife Chuck!!!!
I need to git myself a forge set up while it's still cool outside and start bangin steel and start makin these great blades like you folks are doin. I love em and especially hawks.

Collaboration is great stuff! Chuck you sure do know how to finish these babies off. The pics take me all the way back - I must've been a crazy old trapper in some prior life or something...you sure invoke the smoky memories!

Yep,Jerimiah Johnson! Come to think of it, I think he was about your height, too.Hmmm-m-m-m-m.I do notice some resemblance. I dunno about the crazy part, though. I will have to ask Jeannie. That's some really fine work, Chuck! I don't think anyone can get closer to a period piece than that.

Yes it is - never did quite understand the sole authorship stuff - just look at the Kemal collaboration pieces by Don Fogg and Murad Sayen. And Virgil England says
All of my Damascus billets are made to specification by Daryl Meier. He is my most valued collaborator and a bit of his skill resides at the heart of every blade

For me when two or more people work together they bring something to the table that can be greater then the individual parts.

As to taking one back - well these are using knives if one is so inclined - but they are also meant to make you "feel" something and if we do that then we've succeeded.

Jeremiah Johnson - well it wasn't a bad movie, but it and the book it was based on by Vardis Fisher were pale in comparison to the reality - John "Liver Eatin" Johnson was quite the man - a larger than life character that went beyond the norm.

Boy! I sure got a mental picture of how you look Chuck.;)
I really enjoy the collaborations between you and GG. Keep 'em coming, we all enjoy seeing your collective work.

I cant look at that knife (or the last one you posted for that matter) and not be totally impressed/inspired/awed/lucky(too see them anyway) by what I see.. One day I hope to put life into steel like that. Thanks so much for sharing your gift.
