I was carrying a Case Jr Scout but got a Cadet and now carry the Cadet due to the file. I am curious about the awl's popularity. What is it used for if one is not an equestrian?

I don't know about the Case but I suspect its awl is dull. As far as Vic awls go, especially the alox ones, they are useful whenever you need to cut something and don't want to ruin your edge, scrape, open a box sealed with gooey tape, putting a hole in a leather belt or other object that the blade is too wide for, scraping a fire steel etc. I'm sure others will come along and post their uses as well.

They excel at making small pilot holes for wood screws. Stripping an insulated wire to make a connection. And as mentions, an auxiliary cutting edge. I think the cadet would be 100% improved with a smaller version of the awl from the pioneer.

Some folks may not know that there are basically TWO awls on Vic SAKs. Alox models use a blade that's shaped like the letter L, if you looked at it from the tip to the base. Cellidors use one that is shaped nearly like a chisel-ground wharncliffe blade. much more stout, IMHO, but requires to be mounted on the backsprings of those models.
