I posted a thread in the Axes and Hatchets subforums of mods I am in the process of doing to a CS War Hammer. I figure it may be of some interest here, based on why I chose it.

We've all heard of the Nessmuk trio. Well, here is my end-of-the-world, Ragnarok Trio:
Black Mamba tomahawk, War hammer and Chiruwa Ang Khola:

And my "Do anything in the wilderness" trio, War Hammer, Chiruwa Ang Khola, R-10 and baldric rig:

The reason I became interested int he war hammer is because I am writing a sort of high fantasy story and the main character lives in a northern land of harsh steppe bordered by thick forest. Think Russian steppe meets Norwegian forest. I got to thinking, for people who have to survive in harsh climates, and may have to do anything from heavy chopping to digging, to picking through rocky soil or hammering in stakes for a yurt, what would they use?

Well, I naturally thought of my CAK/R-10 combo, which can do most of that. But what of the things I really either don't want to do with a kukri, or that they just suck at? OK, let's face it, kukris suck as hammers. OK, so I want a hammer. Kukris aren't going to pick apart rocky soil well, and you will damage the edge severely doing so. OK, I want a pick. I looked at rock hammers, but they are too small for serious work (because they were never meant for it), and you don't want to tote around a sledgehammer and a pick mattock on a single horse (these people would tend to not have an extra pack animal unless it was a work party). then someone mentioned a CS war hammer. I wasn't looking for a weapon, but it does, in fact, do all of those things well, as well as serve as a fine weapon (much like a kukri). All that's left is a portable shovel for digging. I don't have a CS Spetsnaz shovel, but that's pretty much the design these people would use (I use a folding GI shovel, although I'll probably get a CS shovel to complete the set). So, there, you have all the tools needed for surviving a bad area, indeed for just about anything needed for primitive living.

Their other shelter, clothing and food items would be carried in a canvas rucksack that usually rode strapped to the back of the horse, or could all be carried on foot, if necessary.

nice set of tools you have there, have always liked the CS warhammer, but since I have two others it was never high on my list..may have to change that..just a historical note that you probably already know but war hammers weren't used until the advent of plate armor and generally were not seen in areas that plate was not used...but in the framework of your story I can see where a similar tool might come into being..also anyone who is going to spend long periods in the wilderness with out some sort of base to work from would have a pack animal of some sort, horses just are not built to carry a rider and all the gear that is needed to survive in a harsh climate for a extended period of time. Of course if your character is traveling from village to village that wouldn't be a issue.

wow... you don't travel light!

Then again you do swing around heavy kukris, so it may be your style!

I guess that would work for living in a northern forest and at the edges of a steppe... Personally I'd just stay in tropical, sub-tropical, and temperate forests and coastal areas. Screw the cold! :D All I'd have for hand tools would be a utility knife, a machete-like blade, and a kukri/ax if necessary (on top of hunting weapon, clothing, food, necessities, etc.)

Well, again, it's fantasy, not this world.
Plus if you figure that warhammers are adaptations of tools, it fits that tools much like it would be created, regardless of the need for it as a weapon. In this case, I could not find anything to fit the bill and was reluctant to use the CS war hammer precisely because it is seen as a weapon first. In the story (and for my uses) it's much more of a tool, and only a weapon incidentally.

Also, the people aren't nomadic. They live in villages, mostly in the forest. They tend livestock (semi wild) in the steppe, and rather than cart enough wood out there to build "ranch houses", they'll take enough to build a few yurts. And yes, that would constitute a work party, and they'd have a train of horses/donkeys. The individual, when traveling, would only carry what is on him, plus some food, water, wool blankets and tarp in the ruck strapped to the horse. Really not much weight added over the rider, just bulky stuff. You'd want the pick and hammer if you were traveling the steppe and had to pick a hole in the hard, rocky ground to stake down a tarp for shelter -- definitely not wanting to use a blade for it. Whereas the kukri is good for harvesting some of the hard, dry wood for fires.

Back in the villages, the kukri and knife would basically be daily wear, and the hammer would stay at home. In the village they can just go get the appropriate tools -- pick mattocks, sledges, axes and mauls for heavy work.

The cold rules. Once I can get out of this hot, sweaty hellhole, I'm gone.

i have become quite enamored with the war hammer of late as well.

great looking mod. thanks for posting it here because the hawk mod area is added to so infrequently that i forget to go back because it is often the same. i have been waiting for your update and pics. great job.

Interesting piece, that hawk; I hadn't heard of "Black Mamba."

Photos of my own, "trio" coming soon....

I completely agree...as I said in the frame work of your story it sounds like a very reasonable adaptation of a tool...and as you said if the character is not a nomad it is very reasonable that the only supplies needed would be for short term use...seems that you have thought things out very well...
