Hey all. I’ve got a 3v El Patron that, while I absolutely love, I find the edge retention to be less than what I was expecting for 3v. It’s easy to put a razor sharp edge on, but seems to dull quickly under relatively mild use (cutting plastic wrap, cardboard, etc.) I trust Jeremy’s work, but was wondering if anyone had any info on how he heat treats this particular steel. Also thinking that maybe depending on how he puts an edge on his knives, maybe I need to sharpen it a few times before I reach that good “virgin” steel. Anyone have experience with this particular configuration?

Are you sure you're not getting a wire edge that folds over with use. Sharpen it as you always do and then strop it and see what happens.

Depends on the roughness of the strop surface, the medium use use to load the strop or if you use it dry, and the pressure you apply. I'd try 5 strokes on each side on dry rough stiff cardboard.
