Calibrating an LCD monitor

I have Googled this topic and what I am getting is way beyond my understanding, capabilities, or needs.

I have just had the video card replaced in my desktop PC and now the colors are not quite the same as what I had before.

I am using an Acer 22-inch LCD monitor and the new v.card is something called a PowerColor 9550 (friend installed it at his place but didn't have access to the monitor). OS is Windows XP.

Is there a fairly easy way to test and/or calibrate the monitor? I tried using Adobe Gamma in Control, but didn't get what I wanted.

What card was in there before and why was it replaced? Maybe the new card is accurate and the old one wasn't and you're just not used to the difference yet?

I thought of that. But I don't think that's it - I'm pretty good at 'eye-balling' colors, etc. and the old card was 'dead-on'. (The old card got fried during a power outage) I've been playing around some more with various settings and I think I'm getting closer to what I had. I thought there might be some kind of easy-to-use 'calibration' freeware out there that's a bit more comprehensive than what comes with the monitor.

What probably happened is that when you had the old card you had the monitor color profile installed. Try the monitor installation cd it has the profile on it.
