Im trying to figure out the California carry law as far as the Balisong goes! I read that in 1978 the made it legal to carry them again and havent found anything about them except that they ARNT considered a switchblade anymore. "As long as the knife does not tend toward the open position, it is not a switchblade. PCS 652K, SB274" So this meens I can legaly carry one? Can anyone help me? im trying to figure out a loophole to be able to carry it. Thanks

I am fairly certain autos and balis are only legal to own in California. You can not legally carry one, open or concealed.

California case law:
Butterfly knife which has blade in excess of two inches is
"switch-blade knife" within meaning of... 653k. [Attorney
General's opinion 11-19-1985.]

Meaning of course in-state sub-2 inch sharp Balisongs are fine :D. I believe buying them (made within the US) is also okay...... but I don't know.

The weirdest part of CA's laws is that it's illegal to sell, give, lend, trade, or otherwise transfer a switchblade or balisong 2"+ in length. However, the law is only against the transfering party. The receiver isn't breaking a law. So you can buy all the switchblades you want, you just can't sell them.

Illegal to carry in California, period! Please don't let someone convince you otherwise. I'm not a lawyer, police officer and by no means an expert on the many laws of California but of this one I'm "pretty" darn sure. Illegal to ship into the United States ( see Cold Steel's website on this ). I have one of the original Balisongs produced by Benchmade when they weren't Benchmade, when they were still in So Cal making knives by hand. Haven't carried the beauty for over 15 years. Sits in my tool box where I pull it out now and then to admire the craftsmanship. Darn shame, they are great knives but not worth the felony you can get for carrying one. Benchmade will not even ship to California. Not sure if Cold Steel will or not. Don't let that keep you from buying one! You can own one and you can do what you want ( within reason ) with it in your own home! They haven't figured out a way to stop us from doing what we want in the privacy of our homes, yet. Bottom line is that they are a great addition to a collection. Do some research and I'm sure you'll find a way of getting one without having to leave the state to get it.
Good luck and best regards....
