I promised I'd post a picture of the bowie with the cowboy panning for gold. A cactus is in the background and a longhorn bull skull is in the foreground beside a running stream.

The scenes run completely through the steel from one side of the blade to the other.

Radial patterns of 15n-20 and 1084 surround the 14 scenes. Fittings have gold nugget carving and plated in 24kt gold with a smooth black stag handle. Enjoy. http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=1023293&a=8494633

Wow. Are the scenes engraved, or stamped, or etched, or what? It almost looks like it's part of the damascus steel, but that can't be the case.

Right?

OH MY GOD, I am in Love.

It usally cost me when I fall in Love.

Something like that sure would look good next to Wind Song and Prarie Storm.

Ron,

Looks Great! Can't wait to see the sword completed! I really love what you did with the handle.

Joel, this is called mosaic damascus. The picture is part of the metal. It goes all the way thru the blade. Some of the pictures are "mirror images", because of the way Ron cuts the billet(zig-zag pattern).

BTW---if you're going to Blade Show West, you can see this knife and meet Ron in person! He's a great guy.

Geez,

I almost fell out of my chair. Ron that is fantastic.

Thanks

That's absolutely staggering. If you don't mind me asking, how do you do that? I understand about the patterns in mosaic damascus, but I can't see how you created a scene in steel to include in the billet.

Really amazing work.

Joel,

I hope Ron tries to answer you question about "how" he does it. But it is a secret. I was fortunate enough to learn the "secret", but cannot divulge it under penalty of death.

It was a great priviledge to see this master working plain ordinary steel into such a masterpiece.

It seems so stingy to only have "wow" to come up with, but I'm speechless. Nice work, Ron!

WOW!

Thanks for all the nice compliments guys. As far as how I do the scenes, well there were 4 separate scenes pieced together with 1084 and .005 nickel 200 shim stock and then forged to a solid mass. Once the cowboy, the bullskull, the stream, and the cactus were forged separately, they were then cut, ground, mitred, machined and joined together for the final forging to join all 4 pictures.

I then made an 11 layer radial pattern billet out of 15n-20 and 1084 and tiled it around the scene and accordian cut the billet and unfolded it so that 7 scenes can be seen on each side of the blade.

(17 years of forging helps also.) Gary, I'll be sure and post the ABS sword when completed. I've got a couple more months of work to go on it.

. You guys had me quivering and then, nothing for my pain. BTW, congrats on the BLADE show awards, Ron. Definitely deserved.

Just found out the "Gold Rush Bowie" that Ron made won best Damascus at the Blade Show West.

Great job Ron!!

The pictures are good but holding the knife is oh so much better. I really was afraid to pick it up so Ron handed it to me at Blade Show West, let me tell you it is incredible!!!
