hello all,
My girlfriend and I will be taking a trip to califorina in a few weeks, last week of september. We will be driving from Simi Valley to lake Tahoe one day and im looking for suggestions on which route to take its either gonna be up the 5 or Rt99 I would like to take a senic rt but time dosent permit that. So what im looking for are suggestions on which of the two to take based on traffic patterns, views, easy to do tourist destinations, knife stores ;), along the route. I have been in this area before but have little knowledge of it any ideas will be appreciated also any must dos in tahoe?? any knife stores in that area worth a look?, thanks

Me, I'd go up US395 Eastern Sierra through Bishop, Carson City, Reno and then Tahoe. You won't regret it! It would be slower, more scenic, and very memorable. Stop at Schatt's Bakery in Bishop for lunch and pastry! Lots of Buffets at Casinos in Carson City, Reno, and Tahoe. Enjoy!!!!

Agree with this completely. 5 & 99 are only good for moving cars and not for scenery.

We'll be in LA too but i gotta friend in simi thats where we'll be leaving from I'll def check out ross cutlery, and gonna check into that 395 idea thanks guys

According to Google maps the 395 route is about 20 minutes longer.

The scenery once you get on the back side of the Sierra is incredible. Nothing on I-5 or Hwy-99 compares.

Manzanar, Bishop, Bodie, Mono Lake are just a few of the stops along the way.

Yea its not much of a time difference not enough to matter to us anyway, So we'll prolly head that way. but keep in mind we are from west virginia so anything out there is gonna be senic anyway lol

the 395 really is worth it if you can afford the time. lots of great scenery.

Don't worry about the time. US 395 isn't a slow highway anymore. Once you hit the 14/395 merge most of the highway to Bishop is 4-lane.

Come out of Simi Valley to 5, go to the 14 and take it out to Mojave where you'll make a right hand turn and continue on the 14 to where it merges with US 395, and on to Carson City, NV where you'll turn left onto US 50 and take it to Tahoe. Great drive with a lot of scenery especially after you leave Bishop, CA.
