Im underage (16) and i was wondering if i should be expecting hassle from cops if i decide to carry either one of my fixed blades (open) or folders (open or concealed).... To my knowledge, there arent any LOCAL (i'm not in LA, San Francisco, or Bezerkley, so fixed blades are OK) laws against it, but im not to sure about federal/state... anyone know?

Thanks!

I know this has been covered several times on the law forum and a search could probably answer this to greater detail but here's how I remember others stating things.
Your carry rights are basically the same as any other citizen of California, age doesn't really matter, be it 2 or 102. Just don't take it to the usual places, school, federal buildings etc.
As long as your parents don't have an issue with you carrying a knife, I don't see why you would be hassled, unless displaying it in a threatening manner or in a place which has a no knife policy.

So if a 13 year old (being me) wanted to carry a folder in California and if the parents didnt care then he could carry a folder?

There is no mention of age in state law.
That doesn't mean someone won't give you a hard time about it, but there is no mention of age in state law.

My suggestion is to not carry any knife, especially a fixed blade, openly unless you are obviously engaged in some legitimate "outdoorsy" activity, like hiking or camping. Unfortunately, your young age means you will be subjected to way more crap from law enforcement than an older person might be. Good luck.

I'm fifteen, and I carry a knife/knives. (duh. :o ;) ) There are many, many "young adults" on this forum, and, except in school, they carry knives most of the time.

As long as you aren't doing anything wrong, shoplifting and whatnot, then there is not really a reason that you'd run into LEOs. If there's not a age law, then if the LEO is REALLY ticked, the he might inject the inertia-opening knife=gravity knife=switchblade thing, which would apply to anyone. :(

while not in violation of the state code, your age likely subjects you to violations under county/city sections.

have you checked these sections to ensure you are compliant?

I checked my city code, and there is no mention of minors not allowed to carry knives.

To be sure, I emailed the local police department, and got this back.

"No, there are no local laws prohibiting a minor from carrying an otherwise LEGAL pocketknife on or about their person. Thank you for your inquiry. If there is anything else with which I can assist you, please do not hesitate to contact me by email or phone (817-***-****). Thank you"

Also, I live in a fairly good part of town, and since I'm not in any gangs, or do TOO much bad stuff, I think I'll be fine.

i would not rely on this statement to keep you out of trouble. people find themselves in all sorts of situations not necessarily of their making.

however, since it appears there is no age restriction, just make sure your knife is legal otherwise, and carry away!
