Call for wrought iron?

I'm getting ready to move, as soon as I can afford a new shop, and I've got some wrought Iron that I'll likely never use, I'm wondering whether there's enough call for it to bother cutting it up and selling it to makers here.

Do you guys need good wrought?

What's better for you guys, flat bar, round stock, or square?

I've got stuff up to 3.5 inches round, but most is 1 inch round, it's all from either bridges that where knocked down during the civil war, or from ships that where decomissioned in the early part of the 20th century.

I need a new shop badly, and I'm getting desperate enough that I'm selling my materials so that I can afford it.

What's a fair price to charge? I've only bought wrought once, and that was 7 or 8 years ago, so I've got no idea.

Thanks for the input,

Tony

I would say that the 1" round would be popular.1.5"X1/4" flat would be a winner, too.I would purchase a good batch from you. How clean is it?
Stacy

It's mostly good clean stuff that works well and etches well.

Some of it isn't quite as clean, but still does fine if you work it at a higher heat. looks great etched though :)

What about 1" x .1/4"?

What's a fair price?

Tony

1 x 1/4 sounds like some good fittings material. I'd certainly be in for some, and I can make a few phone calls. Can't promise truck loads, but I'll do what I can.

I'd like to have some, but have no idea what to charge for it.
It's not something you can get at a store these days...

I'd like to get some too. No idea what it goes for. Trying to finance my own shop this summer so I know where you're coming from. When you figure out pircing let us know, and good luck!

When I buy WI hinges I usually get a 36" or 48" hinge set for about $40.That is basically 6 to 8 feet of 3" by 1/2" to 3/8". The 1" by 1/4" should work for fittings. The 1" round would be good for ferrule spacers,1 1/4" round would be even better.

Ed, I've got at least 400 pounds. In 3/4"x3/4" and 1.5"x.5". As soon as I get some time I'll send you a piece...might be a little while though...lots going on now ;).

on the topic of wrought iron... hows it made? I know it's different from the normal run of cast and forged iron... but different how? I know it takes a hell of a lot longer to rust....

I'd like some also when you guys get going on it. I bet It will go nice with my antique WI anchor chain that I got from IG!

Robert you probably wouldn't use it either. :D

IG,

Were those billets from the anchor chain? or was it old fencing or something like that?

Tony

I've also got some stuff that still has the thin mill scale on it, never been used for anything... long story on how I got it.

Kiwi - Before the days of modern steel making, iron refining was pretty primitive.Pure iron was beaten out into sheets or bars, then folded and beat out again. This was repeated over and over to give the iron a homogeneous texture. It also made it sort of like taffy. It had a directional grain to it (thus giving it strength). In the process of forging out the iron a bit of silicon, boron, and carbon were beaten into the metal. When you make a guard out of old wrought iron, and then etch it,the grain shows up lovely.

But IG! That chain is Soooo nice! I hate to cut it all up. Ok, maybe later on I'll cut up an end piece or something. A little bit  not much  Nice chain :)

Yes it was. I made them into billets in my press. This stuff moves like butter. :D

I have some wrought so I don't need any but I was just thinking for those that were looking for 1.5 by 1/4 if you start with 1 inch round and forge it flat would you get 1.5 in by 1/4. I think you would, or close anyway.

I know this stuff is around and we all can find a bargan from time to time but how much time do you want to spend to save a couple of dollars.

IG's prices sounded good, you would spend that much just looking for a bit. Not to mention the time you are not working on a knife driving around put into a knife would pay for it.

Ok I will crawl back under my rock now
