My sister in law who has taught school in AK for many years and travels the state working with other teachers just called to let me know she was sending me a 14 pound piece of "blue colored" mammoth tusk she had found up above the artic circle.

She wanted to know if I would be interested in any more if she found it. :D

Dude!! Don't tell to many people. I believe only the Native People or someone with a license can keep it.

I think the prohibition is for living endangered species. But thanks.

Here's something an ivory dealer told me. When the price of gold goes up, the price of mammoth ivory goes down. It's because gold has to reach a certain price before some dredgers will work in AK. A lot of mammoth ivory is turned up when they dredge creeks, etc. More dredging = more ivory = lower prices. Sounds right.

I Want Some TOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!! You lucky Dog !!! A 14 lb. piece ??? Yikes !! And Blue too . You lucky Dog !!

This is about whale's teeth ivory. The dealer that i use tod us that the teeth are up to $250 to $300 a pound. It depends on the piece.

Got it yesterday. I'm a little afraid to tackle it. I've cut up ivory before. It's surprising how little finished product there is compared to the whole piece. I guess I'll cut off a piece that is knife handle length across the long axis and then work that down to scales, etc. Any ideas? (besides sending it to you :) )

I think I'd make a nice little stand for that and, well, just sorta stare at it for a long while. :)

You can always cut into the next one she sends ya... :D

Ray, Polish it up before you do anything. Remember Christmas isn't to far off. I did appreciate the coal you've given me the last few years but don't you think its time for something nice and thoughtful?

I would cut one end off and see what is on the inside and take it from there. Good Luck:thumbup:
