Hi everybody. This is my first post on this site.
My littlest brother has recently completed basic training as a field medic, and been stationed at Fort Campbell. Unfortunately this is only a temporary stop for him as he will soon be off to... well somewhere middle east-ish. He is, of course, in great need of a field knife. I'm kind of leaning towards something from TOPs, but I would very much appreciate any advice from those with more experience. while I am an avid knife collector, and at some point hope to be an adequate maker, I have no practical experience in selecting a knife to take to war. I hope that some of you do, or at least, that some of you know people who do.
Thanks a lot.

I recomend a Cold Steel Peace Keeper. CS makes some good quality fixed blades.

If you get the PeaceKeeper, make sure and get it in Carbon V. I tried the 420 subquenched, and it is not very good. But, CS make great products. You might want to check out their SRK if you go with them too.

I sent my buddy over the pond with a TOPS Interceptor #304. Great little knife, and tough as nails. Comes with a boot clip, but with a little tape it works well on the LBV shoulder strap in the upside-down carry.

How much of a field knife is he in need of? Make sure he has a good multitool or even a Swiss Army Knife. Heavy metal is for grunts :)

I have never been to war or the army, but I do know how to beat the crap outa things and see which things are better. Im just going to list some knives I have had experience with. Kabar USMC is a very tough knife, made to handle anything. Ive put my kabar through unimaginable things and it still is one hell of a knife. Yesterday I got my new fixed blade the SOG seal2000. While my SOG is not double edge tipped, all I can say is IMHO it will perform better then the kabar. It is a hefty knife and SOOOOO solid. However if you dont mind spending a few bucks, maybe get a BUSSE? Those things are just ridiculas knives. I dont have personal experience with them though. Maybe someone here does? Hope this babble helps:p

First, I believe he'll be going in about a month, but I’m not sure. Probably less if things don't start looking up soon.
He’s definitely covered on the small and useful side. I’ve got him supplied with a small SAK a spyderco and a crkt. I’m not sure which ones he plans on taking but I’m sure he'll take what he needs.
Another thought I had was that he might ditch his m7 bayonet and get an m9 for field use and just get a hide away that's combat ready in case the worst happens.
Any thoughts on the m9?
