As many of you know I have been trying for many years to force the State of New York to amend its present nebulous and enforced upon whim and individual opinion of the enforcing agency laws, regarding various type of cutlery ie swithblade antiquitys. Also to clarify its position on a legal way for ther cutlery artifacts to be displayed. ( If you go to Larrys site www.Collectors-of-Schrades-R.us ) under the collectors corner you will find an article I wrote on this quest called Museum Road. Frankly I had all but given up on anything ever happening regarding a bill that my actions have forced into being in the legislature. ( attached is a copy of the bill I helped write ) .

Imagine my surprise when I got home and found out that the bill had finally passed the senate. Please see attached email I received from a fellow concerned knife collector . Sent: Thursday, June 15, 2006 4:04 PM
Subject: Assembly Bill

Rick,
The bill # in the Assembly is A07076.
It is this exact bill wordwise that passed in the Senate.
Tell everyone to contact:

Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther
18 Anawanna Lake Rd.
Monticello, NY 12701
845-794-5807
e-mail gunthea@assembly.state.ny.us

Preferably e-mail but if by mail gotta make it quick because the legislature is closing down on the 22nd. Phone is maybe ok but I think they are looking for a paper trail.
I've asked Steve Wilkinson, her director, when the vote is going to take place but haven't heard back yet. When I do I'll let you know.
Good luck and here's hoping, END OF EMAIL

This is the first time since 1958 that there is a chance to amend in any way the outdated idiotic switchblades laws that make a 2,7/8 inch knife that is over 100 years old with one inch blades ( invented so that people would not break a fingernail when opening ) available in a totally legal manner to be exhibited.

As I have written before I still believe this is a shell game to to shut me and some others up however truthfully I never expected it to get through the Senate albeit this late in the session. Please take the time to email the assembly woman at the above address and express your support for Bill A07076. This is the closest we have ever been to getting our feet in the door and decriminalizing these artifacts of our AMERICAN cutlery history. Schrades largest sellers were automatics and I feel they would still be in business if they had been allowed to compete with the foreign automatics flowing unstopped into this country every day.

I do not usually go into other forums ( I get into enough trouble here ). However for those of you who do please advise them of the posting and this opportunity. It is only a quick email if the word can go out we can get this done. It is a genuine positive first step to change something anyone that everyone agrees is nuts but never been able to do anything about. Again any of you who can pass this to other forums please do it now.

One thing to note the assembly bill excludes NYC which was the only amendment to the original senate bill. Otherwise it will allow display with proper procedures for switchblade knives. This will allow many legal opportunitys for people to gather and discuss these artifacts without the harrassment of individual enforcment agency upon there interpretation of the laws regarding these item ( or how they feel that day).

What ever happens at least we are further than I ever expected. PLEASE send an Email to the Assembly person and Please get this info out there. It does not matter if you are from NYS or not this law would eventually help every state. PLEASE LET OTER FORUMS and anyone else you can think of aware of this issue. This may be the last shot we have for a long time. Now it is down to a handful of assembly people please make sure that they know how you feel. LT

FWIW Lt, I'll send the email tonight.

I hope folks realize that the average bill only recieves 5! comments on it.

Surely we can do better than 5 comments.....

Congrats LT!!! You have put so much work into this project these past few years and I am thrilled for you to have finally recieved the recognition that this project deserves. My email is sent, and I wish the best. Keep us updated on what happens.

Atta Boy LT. Good post. Hope they get swamped with emails, letters, and phone calls.

This may sound dramatic but after all these years they have finally given me a loaded gun but I cannot fire it without your help. This might be the last chance your children could have to see and understand this wonderful part of american history. That is with out having to look at a foreign copy Please take the time to send an email to the assembly person. No cost no trouble just a minute of your time. to save a bit of our heritage. Thanks LT

Could you post a link or a bigger copy of the bill? Right now the letters are a bit too small and I would like to read what it is all about. Thanks a lot and hope this all works out:thumbup: :)

Rich, email sent.

I just noticed that you've listed your location as Wallkill NY. I'm from Wallkill NY too. I wasn't aware of this bill until now, but I have sent an email out

Thats good because they instantly dislike me. of course some of that could be my fault like when I tell them that while I have met many politicians some who were honest, the honest ones always had maggots in there eyes and had stopped using air . That usually affects an instant disintergration of relations. Like I said I will believe that this will happen if and ever it does and not before. Expect nothing and you will never be disappointed I am a New Yorker I am never disappointed. Oh well perhapes this time they will prove me wrong in the mean time they said send emails show support so I again Thankyou ALL, LT

Email sent. Thanks LT.
I hope this works. I know you would love to have a museum there in New York.

LT; Email sent. I hope something from Texas will help, but they may discount my out of state opinion. Any way I encouraged passing of the bill not only for the good in New York, but for it's possible impact in the rest of the states.

I received this response back. It's canned, but at least someone took the time to answer...

Thanks for your email. It's important that I hear from my constituents
on the issues which will be coming before the Assembly.

Again, thank you for writing. Please feel free to contact me with future
issues or concerns.

Regards,

Aileen M. Gunther
Member of Assembly

>I am writing to you to urge your support of this bill. Rich Langston, a fellow cutlery enthusiast and friend, has championed this cause for many years now. That an average citizen should take up the torch on something that may seem trivial to some, is quite admirable.
>
>As you know, the manufacture of cutlery was a huge part of industry in the Hudson Valley for many decades. Generations of families worked in these factories, providing highly skilled craftsmanship that is sorely lacking in today's mass production society. It is Mr. Langston's (and others) desire that this rich history not only not be forgotten, but be given a vehicle with which to tell its' story to present and future generations.
>
>That a thing as indiscriminate as a small automatic knife should not be allowed to be displayed in a museum to me is mind-boggling. As you may agree, there are things that are much worse than knives that are perfectly acceptable in today's society, but because of automatic knives' past reputation as a tool of choice for thugs and hoodlums, they are vilified and outlawed. I would also dare say that laws that have outlawed these automatic knives have been part of the reason for the demise of the cutlery industry as a whole, and have put many hard working citizens out of work. The cultural diversity of these factory workers was the very backbone of what made this country great.
>
>It is a sad thought that my children will have to go to a museum to learn about anything that I used to use in my youth, but if that is the only acceptable solution, then that is better than not knowing about it at all.
>
>Please help to ensure that a piece of American industrial and cultural history is not reduced to hidden exile in the back corner of someone's closet.
>
>Thank you for your time.

I hope this has a good outcome. :)
