My fellow Opinel users; when you carry and use your post 1955 Number 6 and above, do normally bother with the blade lock?

I'm curious how many (besides my self) don't routinely use it.

I use it because it’s there. I know it isn’t a serious lock but I twist it around anyway out of habit I suppose.

I use the lock most of the time. Sometimes when I am cutting fruit up for lunch I don't bother with the lock, but I use the lock at least 90% of the time.

I usually lock the blade open when I am using it, but not always. I only lock the blade closed on my 6. Most of my Opinels don’t have that feature.

I usually only use the lock if the particular opinel has a bit loose opening and closing, if it's stiff to open and close then I usually don't bother with the lock.

I use it always on all sizes. My Opinels swing open pretty freely so I can open most one handed and then lock them open with my thumb.

I use the lock; it's there for a purpose, so I take advantage of it. Ordinarily, I don't worry so much about the blade closing when using the knife for cutting things. But on occasion, when I've been stropping the blade to keep it tuned up, the blade will sometimes try to pivot closed while doing so. So I just lock the blade by habit, every time I pick it up. I've noticed this closing tendency on the strop with some conventional slipjoint knives too, if the backspring tension keeping the blade open is a little less-than-strong.

Others' earlier mention of using the lock 'open or closed' is a good point. I'm actually more concerned about the blade partially opening in-pocket, which is obviously dangerous with any knife. So with mine, it's always locked when I carry it in-pocket.

Very very rarely do I bother with the lock. Being a life long slip joint user, the friction folder is a natural for me. But then I keep the Opinel pivot fairy snug so it takes a dedicated pull to open and close. I really can't remember the last time I used the lock. But then, a Sardinian Resolza is one of my very regular carry knives.

Lock? We don't need no steenkin lock!
:D

Yeah, I use the lock on my No. 9 every time. I know I don't need to, as I've never cut myself with a slipjoint closing in use, but because it's there, I use it. It is part of the charm of the knife, after all.

I always use the lock when the knife is closed in my pocket. I often don't use the lock on the open blade, though.

If I am doing a lot with it I will but since it holds stiff in the open position and mostly just need to open it quickly cut something then put it up I frequently do not lock mine.

Yup. It's my thinnest sharpest blade. I see no reason to use it as a friction folder when I have the lock right there.

That's what it's for :D especially useful keeping it locked in the pocket or bag:thumbsup:

I suppose the analogy might be, on a multi blade knife do you only open or use one blade?:D

I've never understood the fascination for friction folders, backwardness...:D:D:eek:

I usually use the lock. Once I open it my thumb just naturally pushes the lock around into the locked position. I don’t even think about it. Just happens naturally.
