Calling All Spyder-Nuts! Questions From A Spyderco Noob..

Long story short, I recently hit a stalemate w/ Benchmade’s designs after a long 12+ years of user experience.. I researched a lot of great companies, and even considered some customs.. But I have always had this Spyderco itch.. that I never acted on.. So I decided to order a Military PE/Uncoated. (I’m pretty damn excited, won’t be here until Tues :grumpy: Damn weekend shipping bs). Anyways, I know how BM operates regarding their LE’s, but I have some questions regarding Spyderco’s processes.

1) How often do they do “Sprint-Run’s”?
- Do they usually announce on their website, or dealer sites?
- Will they ever do a ‘millie’ in M390, S90V, or M4 again?

2) Which models are made in the U.S.? (As of now, I know of the ‘millie’ and para’s).

3) How does the coating’s on Spyderco’s coated blades last? Benchmade’s coatings are horrible, the reason in which I buy un-coated nowadays.

4) Besides the lock difference, are the ‘para’s just smaller ‘millies’ in a practical sense..? Kind of how BM has smaller versions of bigger knives..

Thanks!

I love the leaf-shaped blade styles.. I went from loving spear-points to having to try out a spydie, I think it was a good decision.

Some of their knives are dealer exclusives...others are sprint runs...Sprint runs are available from any Spydie dealer...dealer exclusives are ONLY available through the dealer that paid for the exclusive sprint run...i.e. Knifeworks/PM2 CTS-204P.

Their blade coatings are superior to BM coatings nowadays. I've tried them all and my Spyderco coating outlast anything from BM...including the older BM coatings.

If their knife is made in the USA, it is labelled Golden, Co USA Earth.

There isn't a set announcement protocol or timeframe. Once a split run is done if it were to be repeated something will have to change blade steel, scale color etc.

If you go to the website when you're looking at the catalog you can choose the country of origin.

As for the black coating depending on the country of origin it changes. The most durable and long-lasting coating is what used on the US models and that is DLC.

For your last question I guess that's more a matter of opinion. I certainly don't view the para2 as a scaled-down military.

Your choice for the military being your first couldn't be better. It is really the epitome of what Spyderco is.

Sprints come out randomly, there isn't a set schedule. Right now, the Golden factory is upgrading and is VERY busy, so I wouldn't be surprised to see even announced sprints lag behind schedule. Honestly, I think that you will here about sprint runs faster here or on Spyderco's forum faster than anywhere else.

Go to the Spyderco main web site and look at the catalog under the heading of 'Country of Origin'. They list where each knife is made.

Very few of Spyderco's knives are coated, but the Paramilitary 2 and the Delica/Endura knives that I own with DLC have held up very well.

The handle shapes are different on the Para than the Millie, but they DO have similar blade shapes♠.

Just to avoid confusion the coating used on the delica/endura it's not DLC.

Really? What is it? PVD or a teflon coating?

Now I gotta go to the web site to check

Ahhh OK. The black Delica/Endura are coated with black titanium carbonitride. LOL Learn a new Spydie fact every day. That's my goal!

Interesting. I'm a sporadic Spyderco user. Got one in 2000 and then a bunch in 2006 and then none until late last year but now I'm back on the saddle again since then. My first post on this Spyderco manufacturer subforum was on June 16, 2013 but really active since August 3rd.

So, if a Military with Carbon Fiber scales were to come out it cannot be in M390 or S30V or S90V or BG-42 (perhaps others) since those sprints have already come to pass?

Theoretically no. Anything is possible but it hasn't been done in the past.

Not often enough, or way too often, depending on your POV (and possibly the thickness of your wallet). Some are announced, some hinted at, some come as total surprises. Other steels have been done multiple times on the same platform, so another Military Sprint in any or all of the ones you mention could certainly happen.

2) Which models are made in the U.S.? (As of now, I know of the ‘millie’ and para’s).
If you go to their online catalog webpage, there's an option to show all the products made in a given country.

The coating on the US made knives is DLC and most folks who have them seem to think it's pretty damn good.

In a practical sense, yes, aside from the lock the ParaMilitary 2 is just a "downsized" Military

Thanks for all the input to everyone who commented. The para is definitely gonna end up in the rotation one day, just love the 4" blade on the Millie.. If I could end up with an M390 version of either knife, I'd be pretty happy! Luckily I have mucho experience with S30V in the meantime :)

Spyderco's S30V is no slouch too. :D

The Millitary is one of my favorite Spydercos. Hope you enjoy yours. Along with the Stretch, Para 2, Calypso sprint, etc...

as far as knowing about sprint runs, if you keep your eye on this forum and the forums at spyderco.com you should have a good heads up on anything coming out.

right now the super blue runs are the nearest. the sb endura just dropped and might still be available at some dealers. the sb Delica is hopefully a month or two away.

Thanks, I'll keep my eyes peeled :)

It's been a day since I've picked up my para II and I'm completely hooked. The leaf shaped blade is killer, and the para II is a great carry for EDC. I might keep my Millie for hunting, and EDC the para II instead.
