Calling all Spyderco techno owners, some questions please

I have been researching this little knife for awhile now, I've searched the forums , but can't really find what I'm looking for. This little knife has caught my eye and I want it but I don't have a knife store locally so all my purchases come from online retailers and I haft to go by youtube videos and bladeforums posts. The knife will be used for general edc tasks, mainly breaking down boxes, opening up boxes , prying the industrial staples out of the boxes to be able to recycle them. A couple of things worry me though, I have medium size hands, and I will be using the knife while wearing gloves while at work, I'm kind of concerned about the lack of a choil and full ti scales and as small as the knife is it looks to me like it would be really easy for your hand to slip up on the blade. If anyone has a techno and say a zt 550 or a manix 2, a dpx hest 2.0 etc. could you post some comparision pics so I can see exactly how small the knife is, the size compared to other knives like i said pics of it maybe next to one of the knives I mentioned would be great as I've owned the knives I mentioned above before. Also how does the knife perform, I had a cts-xhp millie so I kinda know about the steel, I'm just curious how it performs it that small of a knife and that thick of a blade . any and all feedback and comparision pics would be great. I searched the forums as i said and I've seen some pics of it to other knives, also if anyone is willing to post pics of the knife in hand that would be great, I'm used to carrying bigger blades, but this little knife is calling my name , I just want to see the size and how it fits in the hand before I drop that kinda coin on this blade. FWIW I have a southard flipper on the way, I plain on removing the pocket clip and pocket carrying the techno. does anyone do that? If so how does it feel just pocket carrying it without the clip. Again any and all feedback will be appreciated , thank you in advance for all who post.

I don't have a techno but I have handled it. It's a much smaller knife than the others you've mentioned. If your looking for something similar to it but maybe with a better choil, check out the Benchmade 755, ti frame lock, M390 steel, short stout blade.

I have a Techno but it's out getting spiffied up ATM. It is a small knife so I'm not sure how well you will be able to control it with gloves on. I have small hands but pretty long fingers and the Techno fits my hand perfectly. I've also had two MPRs and while they are fantastic knive, I like the Techno more. It seems more solid to me and carries better. The Technos blade is very thick (4.5 mm) but gets nice and thin at the edge. If you don't mind waiting a few days until my Techno gets back, I'd be more than happy to take some pics next to my Manix.

The 755 clip is not the easiest to deal with but makes no difference if he is going g to take it off. And I do like it more than the 755 side by side, I'm slightly spyderco biased though lol.

To the OP, why not just use the Southard? I'm sure it can more than perform your intended tasks.

why have one spydie when you can have 2 ? and yea the 755 is on my radar, I just hate the looks, The techno on the other hand I love the looks of and was gonna pocket carry it just to scratch it all up and get that "worn" look to it , not just remove the pocket clip and pocket carry from now on . As soon as it gets good and beat up by my keys and change I was gonna put the clip back on and carry it regular.

You're right, I forgot he was going to take the clip off. The Technos detent is much stronger than the MPR though. All three of the MPRs I have handled have pretty weak detents so I would worry about them opening in my pocket. I'm not trying to bash the MPR though. They are really fantastic knives and M390 is my favorite steel but the Techno just suits me better. CTS-XHP is pretty beast, too.

yea I like how cts-xhp is an agressive cutter, but I had an m390 benchmade 710 and m390 benchmade afck I prefer m390 to xhp, but like I said going back to looks the techno looks like a much more expensive higher quality knife than the mpr, Anybody got any pics they can post up???

I don't have it next to a 550 or anything huge, but I do have a comparison pic of my Techno next to a Jester and a ruler. Sorry for the weird fuzziness, it's technically a scan of the knives, so anything that was not flush woth the scanner is a bit out of focus. Hope this helps!

Also, for what it's worth, the Techno kicked all my other RFP knives out of the pocket for a good month. Perfect size for me (admittedly, I have small hands and am able to get a 4 finger grip on it pretty easily) and with an added lanyard, I am sure it would be great for any other sized hands.

Sigh...

I wish I was able to respond to this thread as a Techno owner. Soon enough I will be though. It's on a short list of knives I'm attempting to wrap up for 2012 before I start down the 2013 wish list :D

I removed the clip on mine and do pocket carry it. It is a perfect size for it. I have medium size hands myself and have no issue with gloves on but opening it with a gloved hand is not easy one handed, I use two. It is a great little knife and has kicked out most of my other knives from pocket carry. Using it to remove those big industrial staples I think would dull the edge really fast.

The fact that it doesn't have a choil is about 50% of why I bought this knife. I know everyone gets freaked out by choilless/guardless knives but I love them, I get more control and don't plan to do pushups with them so I have yet to experience slippage problems.

As for clipless carry, I find that due to its weight, thickness, and closed length it prints too badly, so I keep the clip on. I suppose your legwear of choice could change this but it's not very good for slacks and is semi-okay for jeans (for me at least).

I don't get why people need choils. If you need a choil so you don't cut yourself you are doing something wrong. Stop stabbing stuff. That's not what knives are for.

Get the Techno it's an excellent and beautiful knife.
It carries well, fills the hand nicely(I have large hands).
It is actually fairly easy to open(one handed) with gloves on(just tested it for you) and I have large hands.
The scales are all ti but if you have a good grip on the knife, the lack of choil shouldn't be a problem for you at all.
I have never had my hand slip, it may be all ti, but even in a not so tight grip the knife does not slide at all.
It allows a great grip with an awesome steel.

The blade is thick so it's a beast of a knife that can handle anything, but with the FFG it's very thin behind the edge and is a heck of a slicer as well.

I don't have a side by side pic with any of the knives you've mentioned.
But I do have a few side by side pics with larger knives.

I love the Techno but I really think you would have trouble opening it with gloves on (depending on how think they are). That being said you can open knives with two hands which I sometimes forget now days.
