Hi all.
I just purchased my first Spyderco - a Spydiechef and I think I am in love with the design of this knife.
However, I do have a few questions that I am curious if the community can help me answer.

1) 1)My Spydiechef seems to have a bit of a gap on the back 2/3rds (or more) of the lock bar in open position. In other words, only the front section of the lockbar is interfacing with the tang. Is this normal lockup? Please see the following photo for example - note the gap between the lockbar and blade.

2) 2) I am also experiencing a bit of detent lash. In other words, when the blade is closed, before the knife even breaks the detent, the blade has play. The main concern here is that the blade tip can be pushed out enough to touch, even before the detent is broken. Also seems to be a bit of a sloppy execution. Someone suggested that this is common with the Chef. Have you experienced this on your examples?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Tony!

The lockbar engagement on your Chef looks just like it does on mine. As far as the detent lash goes.. it looks to me like the blade is staying pretty well-seated within the handle until you actually start pulling on it and then returns to normal position when you let pressure off.. without actually feeling it for myself.. I personally don't think I'd be too concerned about it based on that video. I'd say as long as the lockup feels solid, then use it with confidence.

I've never noticed these problems on my SpydieChef and I'm not even going to look to see if it's like yours because it's not a problem for me.

There's no such thing as "perfection" in any thing and you certainly cannot expect anything near perfection for the price of SpydieChef.

My advice is simply: If you don't like it, sell it and get something else that bothers you less.

Thanks guys.
I've none of my other knives have exhibited these "behaviors" and I'm just trying to get an idea if the lockup is normal and if the lock rock is something to be concerned about.
From what I'm gathering, my lockup is normal. And the lock rock/ lash, while not ideal, is within the realm of acceptable.
R ricklikesknives , you are correct, the lock rock does not exhibit itself unless I try to manually pull on the spine of the knife.

When it comes down to it, while I would rather not have lock rock (and maybe a slightly more robust lockup), I do like the overall design of the knife and can live with it's flaws. I'll be keeping it.
Thanks for the perspective!

OP - lock rock is annoying. It will perhaps not affect the use and safety of the knife but it is an issue that you should definitely reveal when you decide to sell it. IMO it is a defect on a knife of $200+. Unfortunately there is no easy fix for it, especially by the end user.

I agree. I have plenty of cheaper knives that have a more solid lockup.
Having to disclose the problem in case I decide to sell is one reason I'm considering returning the knife. That's an instant decrease in resale.

Good advice. If only I could find a retailer with a Spydiechef locally!

Most online knife dealers/vendors will allow you to return a knife w/in a specific time period as long as the knife has not been used. All you have to do is check the return policy fo the dealer/vendor before you make the purchase.

Many dealers/vendors also do not charge sales tax and provide free shipping. Some will even pay for return shipping but, even if you have to pay for the return, that's a small price to pay for a chance to see/feel a knife that you're interested in before fully committing to buying it.

Or, you could just buy the knife sight unseen and resell it here on the Exchange if you don't like it. Every Spyderco that I've seen on the Exchange has sold quickly as long as the knife was priced appropriately.

You may not get all of your $ back but you should get most of it back. Like a return shipping charge, that's the cost of "looking" which will be far less than the cost of the knife itself.

So, IMO, there's no reason you can't handle any knife that you are interested in, even if there isn't a knife dealer/vendor located near you.

No detent lash on my sample.

My eyes and ambient lighting are too poor for me to see the lockup as you’ve done. From the witness mark on the tang, I’d say mine is doing something similar.

Hey folks. Just wanted to provide an update.
I ended up sending in my Spydiechef for warranty evaluation.
Spyderco went ahead and replaced the knife with a brand new one.
The new knife has both a more robust contact patch, as well as little to no detent lash/ play.
In any case, I am well pleased with the outcome. Thanks Spyderco!
