Ok, so the other day I was driving to work, when all of a sudden my 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee just cuts off. I turn the key and it'll turn over, but not start. So I get it towed back to my old apartment, turn the key again, and listen for the fuel pump to run, which it doesn't. So, I tear everything down, remove the fuel pump, then get the bright idea to try checking the fuses. Switched the ABS system fuse with the fuel pump fuse, voila!. Fuel pump runs when the ignition is turned on. Unfortunately, I had taken it out of the canister, and in doing so, broke a piece that held it in. So no putting it back the way it was. No worries, I ordered an inline fuel pump, and performed the Swampy Bypass, which pretty much just means putting the fuel pump on the outside of the tank. Got everything hooked up, got a new fuse, turn the key, and the pump ran. Tried to start the Jeep, and all it would do is crank. We checked and rechecked everything, but had no luck. My friend pulled a plug and held it against the block, but it doesn't look like it's sparking at all. So, we're thinking, maybe the distributor cap, rotor, ignition coil, or ignition module have screwed up.

Anybody have any ideas?

I've rarely seen a coil go bad, and the rotor and distributor cap are inexpensive replacements if you want to try that, but I've seen many a computer ignition module go bad. I don't know if you can take it out and have it checked somewhere but that could be a likely suspect in my opinion.

Finally, before doing anything check for a loose electrical wire in the ignition system. I once had a coil wire come loose many years ago and had the exact same problem.

What were you doing when it just cut off? Going over a huge bump? Some cars have crash buttons that stop fuel/spark incase of accident. I'd check that out.

Minjin,

Did that, thankfully I caught it before I tried starting it. Now have plenty of fuel pressure.

A couple people on jeepforums suggested that it might be the crankshaft position sensor. I did a little research, and it seems that they have a tendency to randomly go bad. I bought one today, but didn't have a chance to get it in. Hopefully I'll be able to do that tomorrow.
