I picked up a Custom 2001 CQC7 a few nights ago form Ktint. (Great guy) The thing was brand spanking new. I just noticed tonight that the liner has a secondary detent on the opposite side of the liner lock. Kind of like on the Commander. Do all of the 7's have this or is this something new.

I noticed this on a 2001 CQC9 which I just picked up from Jbravo. I don't need to say anything about him. We all think he's a great guy. For the other CQC9 & CQC7 owners out there, do you have this on yours. I don't have this on any of my other customs. Thanks :)

David, congrats on the new toys ! Yes, my CQC9 has the 2nd detent also, so i figure the CQC7 i have coming will have it as well but will let you know after i make final payment and get it.

Tattoo,

Thanks for the reply. Please let me know about it when you get it.

Anyone with an older 7 or 9. I'm curious if the olders ones have this feature.

It seems late 2000 and all 2001 Emerson started putting the double denent in his customs....about the same time the factory did. I think it is a safety feature for tip up carry. I have a 6 and Viper 3 from 2001 which both have them have it...BTW they are not as smooth as the pre double detent.

The current CQC7s I' ve handled all have the secondary detent ball. Their actions do not feel as smooth than earlier/ prior models though.

I have a Pre-date CQC6, no secondary detent, very smooth action.
My CQC5 and CQC7 both are dated 2000 but still do not have the secondary detent so are still nice and smooth.

I've had an opportunity to handle a CQC7 with the secondary detent and it was certainly 'stiffer' than my own.

Just my own $.02 worth.

Hey guys, even if it IS stiffer, I won't be complaining once i f-ing GET one! :D

I've checked my folders, no 2nd detent on any of my folders...ie. CQC5 2000, CQC6 UNDATED , CQC6 2000, CQC7 UNDATED, CQC7 2000, CQC8 2000 nor CQC9 UNDATED

I have not handled a 2001 custom folder but I have noticed a smoother action on my undated folders as opposed to dated folders with the exception of the CQC8....which is buttery smooth.

Lock-up on the undated folder also feels "smoother"....my dated folders has a kinda "gritty" lock to it when the liner-lock engages or dis-engages

If I recall correctly the 2nd detent was put in the production folders round about mid-99. I have an early 99 Commander and a slightly later '99 Commader that has these differences. You are correct, it is an added safety feature.

I think I read once that the second detent was put in to help align the blade between the liners. The problem which I have with most of my customs, including the new CQC9 is that the blade sits too close to the liners on the side with the clip. The second detent is not helping the situation because it's putting pressure on the side of the blade without the clip. Thus pushing the blade towards the side with the clip.

The feel of the 7 is gritty. The 9 is pretty smooth. The smoothest customs which I own is a halfmoon 6; & this one has the thinnest washers. All of the newer customs have pretty thick washers. They're really thick on my dated CQC5's.

The commanders which I have with the second detent were very stiff/gritty in the beginning. After about 50-100 openings it smoothed out. I guess the ball on the detent needs a chance to mark a path or pattern on the blade. You can see a nice deep semi circular path on the blade of a Commander if you take it apart. Thanks

HC Leo,
I know what you're saying about the lock engagement on the older non dated ones. They kind of "Pop" into place when you open the blade. Kind of with that reassuring sound. The new dated ones kind of slide into place.

I took out my CQC9 to get a better picture of your problem. I have a non dated CQC9 but can visualize your problem.

I'm not sure if this might be happening to you but is the blade scraping the liner when you open it? Because the blade is already so close to the liner the added pressure from the 2nd ball detent might aggrivate the situation.

Maybe give this try :

Could not have put it better myself
