Appointment at Veterans Outpatient Clinic was scary news. My doctor said I had traces of blood in my urine. When asked worst case scenario he said bladder cancer. I'm looking for an eaddress to get a bit more information about other factors that might be better news.I'm a tough old bird but a bit bewildered .
I'm sure there is a net source to provide medical information. Can anyone please help ?

Uncle Alan

Uncle Alan! That's awful. Obviously, you need to wait for a final diagnosis before you get all worked up. Just keep your cool until they figure out what's going on with you. If it does turn out to be the worst case scenario, then you'll have plenty of people here to offer you support. You're not just a tough old bird but a funny one too. You're an asset to our little community. Like I said in the other thread, we're gonna keep you around so hang tough. I'll keep you in my prayers. :)

The Mayo Clinic has a branch in Jacksonville; I know thats pretty close to you. If you want a second opinion its probably the best place you could go.

God bless and good health.

Uncle Alan,

My thoughts are with you.

I did a quick internet search on "blood in urine." I found on one site that there are 88 different causes of blood in urine - and not all of them are as serious as bladder cancer. That doesn't count medication interactions that can cause it.

So please don't jump to the worst case conclusion. I'm sure you'll be following up with a specialist.

I'll say a prayer, and hope for a good prognosis.

Uncle Alan,
first of all, wait for a full diagnosis. For all we know (from the info that you gave us) you received a rap in the crotch wile trying to beat up a couple of sailors in a bar fight. :p

Seriously, there are a number of things that can cause this. When will you get your test results?

Meanwhile, try to be as relaxed as possible. Worry does not help. If you have trouble relaxing, well, you have counseled others in these forums as to the value of prayer--take your own advice.

meanwhiile, you can certainly play on the webmd site to get some more info--just do not be too sure that any applies to you. That's what doctors are for. Wait for the diagnosis, keep us posted, and remember the values of second opinions. Best of luck.

Remember you did say worse case. Are you a heavy drinker? Do you or have you abused youself in the past with booze or drugs, poor diet or over salty foods?, does anything like this run in the family? How much clean water do you drink each day?

My wife had a nasty lump in her mouth that looked like cancer, it turned out to be an infection in the root and this was a build up of a puss like liquid (barf) needless to say all were relieved.

Go to at least 2 specialists, not GP's. GP's are a waste of time and only good for injections and cough medicine.

Remember Lance Armstrong was told he probably wouldn't live, then got involved with doctors that were saying, 'Well if you want to ride again' the other doctors had writen of him rideing a bike ever again, nevermind winning the TDF.

Urologist, Thats who you need to see.

Whenever you ask for worst case scenario, don't be shocked when you here a death knell.

The appropriate question is what is this most likely? Then Who do I see to get this checked out properly and will you give me a referral.

A patient asks me what the worst case is, my answer is always the same for anything: Death.

My personal experience would cause me to disagree, Temper. The GP is usually the first medical contact and in my case was able to diagnose a need for referral to a specialist, as pcnorton said.

Uncle Alan, it is really easy to get carried away with fear in this kind of thing. Don't let that happen. You need more information from specialist. It could be any number of other things. I have become an optimist about health issues. I will bet you a Coke he gives you a shot of penicillin in the butt and sends you home. :)

Have had an enormous boil on my right knee for about 2 weeks but is down to a shooter marble in size now . Have been taking 500mg Keflex for 7 days & will finish them at the end of 2 weeks. As someone mentioned ,it might be medication or even from some of that contagious bacterial infection in the knee. Think this infection might be a long lingering one . First appeared when my unit was in Japan & Korea. GI docs gave me massive protein penicillin shots to kill it It popped up on occasion fairly regularly until recent years & I'd forgotten about it .
I do not readily panic but am concerned . Since I'm rated 100% disabled by the VA they will give me better medical care than the average doctor can . Too, they have a fantastic clinic minutes away in Dayrona. Doc will call results of todays bloodwork . If needed,I can get a same day appointment with their uroligist .
I am overwhelmed with good wishes, advice on sourcing wanted data. Thank you all .
Particulary thank you for your prayers. We should all conduct ourselves is if today at some point today we'll meet our Maker.

Uncle [ nice to have friends ] Alan :D :D

Are you peeing ok? Is there any pain when you pee? It could be kidney stones.

When I was much younger I tried to drink Canada dry but it didn't work. Gave it up,prospered & gained a better class of friends. Drank 1 draft beer in '90 & got wobbly.Evidently my problem does not stem from booze abuse . Probably have had 3 pain pills this year. Take hand weight exercises from a chair each day.Two large coffees & a couple of smokes at 5 am & several glasses of iced tea throughout the day. Tea is not very sweet like most Southerners like it. I don't like chilled syrup as I call it.
Bowel movements are clock-work regular. No problem urinating but have the old man hesitation which is common among my peers.
Do a lot of word puzzles to keep the brain active .
Been living with a spinal cord injury since the Korean war . Have commanded a DAV chapter in NC & helped many get their disability awards . Serving God & man IS rewarding. Peale , I believe, said it's not what has happened to you,it's what you do with it. Positive thinking is my way of life. I'm prepared to face whatever arises & accept it as a challenge .

Uncle Alan :D :D

Uncle Alan,

I think you have the right attitude for whatever comes your way. It's wonderful that you take such good care of yourself. The word puzzles are great. My Portuguese grandfather is in his 80s. Up until this last past year or so, he would make me quiz him on different parts of the dictionary whenever I went over to his house. He'd say something like, "Ask me any word in the G's." He'd always begin by pronouncing the words with his lovely Portuguese accent. I think I enjoyed it more than he did. :) You keep your body and mind active and have faith in God's plan for you, and you can't go wrong. God bless. :)

BTW, thanks for your service to our wonderful country.

Well, I'm a Bio grad, going to med school in '06, and my first name is Casey, how's that do? ;)

The CDC is an excellent source of info on most anything medical- www.cdc.gov. WebMD is good, but very basic. Bounce one off the other, and you should find out.

There are lots of other causes for blood in the urine. You could have a urinary tract infection, suffered an injury (my brother did this horsing around in the yard) so wait to get a full diagnosis.
