All I have to say is
Busse, Scrapyard and Swamprat all market themselves as hard use tools. I've received a couple emails basically saying not to use Busses "hard" and that I'm an idiot for screwing some up.
For the record, Busse breaking issues -
1. Sarsquatch - My fault and not broken. I refused warranty work because it was my alterations that broke it. I figured because it was a "high end" steel it would hold up to extreme thinness. In a nutshell, it did "hold up", as it didn't chip, it dented and folded to the point where it couldn't be sheathed. In the defense of Busse, I reground the knife VERY thin, I took a lot off the primary grind and thinned the bevel to roughly 10 degrees each side. The primary grind was fine, but the bevel was just too thin. In the end I ground out the damage and thickened up the bevel, all was well. I didn't use the warranty.
2. The Boss street - Also my fault, but in MY defense Busses are advertised as "sharpened prybars". I broke it prying, I wouldn't have used it if I wasn't convinced it would walk away unscathed. That said, I also wouldn't have used the warranty but if I reground the tip, the knife simply would have been too short. Another reason why I buy Busse blades, they're backed up with the best warranty i've ever delt with. I broke the knife like an idiot and they replaced it. For that, I'll always buy Busse blades.
3. The FBMLE - I don't consider it "broken", but it's being sent in for some work on the handles after I use it some more. I was batoning, some knotty wood, the knife got stuck. I was using a heavy baton and the handle shifted some.. Some have said "use a wedge", to that I say "I don't own a nearly 700 dollar knife to have to use a wedge". Call me an idiot, but I could also use an 8 lb maul.
Before everyone says "it's a knife, it's not what it's designed for", I must disagree, I don't even chop up concrete blocks, which is encouraged by Bussekin companies. Here is an example:

Thanks to him and what's left of his sanity, I now have chopped up concrete blocks all over my property!!!!! [Eek!] [Eek!] [Mad] [Wink]
This test was included because Cliff has destroyed so many other manufacturer's blades when "choppin' the concrete" that the RAT PATROL decided it was a necessary evil to include it.
We have also tested many other manufacturers blades and ALL have ended in catastrophic failures. Don't try this at home unless you have a face shield!!! And be sure to use brand New concrete blocks. Old blocks are unbelievably easy. The new ones will shiver your timbers with every impact!!!!
Rat On!!! "
So before you judge, maybe dust off your Busses and use them, they're pretty amazing. I haven't collected anything since baseball cards as a kid, life is about experiencing, not acquiring. Have fun!
PS. Hopefully FBMLE and Battle Rat Chop off tomorrow!
