Mr. Carter,

I didn't want to hijack your competition thread, so I'll ask here.

Do you know of any manufacturers using CPM M-4 in production knives?

Or have you heard any rumors of any of them planning on it?

I have a Spyderco "Mule Team" knife in CPM M-4, but it's a limited production semi-custom job, so I can't just go online and order another one for a Christmas present for someone.

But I dearly love the steel. :):) I reprofiled it to 15 degrees (30 inclusive) and polished it to .25 micron, and it cuts like a light-saber!

TIA,

Ben

Sorry, as a custom knife collector and maker, I really don't keep up that well with what the production knife companies are doing. With Crucible steel being sold off in bankruptcy I think M4 might be rather scarce for awhile.

I have never made a knife from M4 but I would like to give it a try sometime. I have been told by Warren Osborne and Gayle Bradley that it is pretty difficult to work. That doesn't put me off but M4 is pretty expensive sometimes hard to find.

I have tried a lot of steels but I mostly use 440C, 154CM, ATS34, D2, Alabama Damascus and occasionally some Sandvik steel.

Of course if a customer wants a particular steel for a custom knife I will try my best to accomodate them. However, most steels have little nuances that one must learn to get the most out of them. I am hesitant to sell the first knife made from a steel that I am unfamiliar with unless I have some very detailed instruction from a reliable source. Even then, I would want to test the knife to make sure it performed the way it is supposed to.

Saw this thread and thought I could help out.
Benchmade has made a few limited edition runs with M4 blades. You can find them for sale from time to time.
You have already mentioned the Spyderco mule, but Spyderco is working on a folder that is a Gayle Bradley design that will have an M4 blade. They had the prototype at Blade Show this year.

Thanks for the info! :)

Good news indeed considering that I'm already a "Spyderholic!" :D
