I have a quick question regarding folks experience using the SKED for evacuations or confined space extraction. Current instructors are teaching that it is mandatory to also use a KED or OSS with the SKED. I don't agree. Of course, if there is risk or indication of spinal injury then by all means. But otherwise, I don't believe it adds anything to provide comfort or security to the patient. It definitely adds complexity and weight and may even decrease comfort.

I have been carried in a SKED and it is not combfortable for an extended period. I have also been dragged in a SKED. Not ideal but it works. Would a vest-type immobilizer have made it more comfortable? I doubt it. These are my thoughts and observations. If you have experience with this equipment then I am interested in hearing yours.

P.S. I've been using the KED and/or OSS for over 20 years in street EMS. I know the devices and their quirks well.
P.P.S. I am not referring to using the SKED for raising or in a vertical environment. Different animal all together.

I don't recall the need to use KED or other backboard, collar-yes. But, as we know, protocols frequently change, and I'm about 6mo overdue for recert.
