Anyone else excited for this? :) I always wanted a Caly 3.5 but now that i saw a new version, i am saving up for it!

Anyone know when it will come out? I am guessing it will be more expensive than the current version...?
(hope this thread hasnt already been made, but couldnt find it)

I am!

Sal showed it to me at Blade Saturday. It is STUNNING!
ZTP and CF...whats not to love? Plus feels great in the hand.
Definitely going on my must have list.

I've pretty quit asking "when" about prototypes. :D

As to price, Sal was rough estimating ~$200 street, maybe a bit more, which would be great.

Does anyone know if the bolsters Ti or SS?

I am excited about this knife the Tuff and Southard.

On a knife of that quality, I would first guess Ti over SS.

Sorry, I forgot to ask, hopefully someone else will know. My guess would be the same as Rev's. Great looking whatever it was.

Speaking of bolsters. There was another fairly large proto (I forget the name, I gotta start writing stuff down!) with very large BRASS bolsters.
That just doesn't look "right" to me on a Spyderco. I know many folks love brass (I don't)....but on a Spyderco?

i'm not a traditional guy that much but with a carbon blade and some patina brass bolsters can look cool. just my opinion.

I'm getting one ASAP. I'm pretty sure the knife, liners & all, will be just like the Caly 3 in ZDP-189. Stainless liners, I believe.

First post hello BF . I am in for 1 . I have been holding off getting the reg production version , ever since Sal mentioned they were doing A CF version.

If it was a prototype then they probably used brass rather than another material because it's cheaper than Ti or Stainless.

So the knife has bolsters? I figured it would be just like the 3 but in the larger size. The Caly has never had bolsters so I'm surprised it's getting a change.

I also doubt the brass proto has anything to do with it being a cheaper material to use on a prototype. Spyderco is going to make a proto as close to the final form as possible. Since they don't use brass it would probably be more difficult to find a piece of brass than grabbing a piece of ti that they use and have laying around. I do seem to remember reading about a knife that might use brass. To bad there are no pics for those of us that couldn't make it to blade.

The impression I got from Sal was the brass was intentional and part of the designers concept for the knife.

I will the last one to argue with Sal about designs, and they may very well be on to something that will be hugely popular.
Pwet seems to like the idea, and a very knowledgeable gentleman who was chatting with Sal when I was, thought the idea was great.

Just struck me as so unusual for a Spyderco, but sometimes thats a good thing.

now there's an idea. how could the spyderco philosophy be applied to a "traditional" design in brass and wood? well the sage 4 was one.

Excellent point.
Had not thought of it that way, but I'd bet some folks thought wood on a Spydie looked as odd as brass does to me.

That brass may grow on me, I try my best to keep an open mind.

i would like the long, sinuous curves of both blade and handle of those case and buck toothpick knives but with a lockback and spydey hole. brass liners, nickel silver bolsters, jigged bone inserts. :)

the caly's handle at the pivot area looks too slim to carry bolsters (but maybe that's what it needs!) question to makers: does a well-fitted front bolster really improve durability and lessen eventual blade play?

Surely it won't have bolsters. The talk above just made me kinda wonder.

And no, a bolster doesn't improve durability, or lessen eventual blade play. I'm no maker, but thats what Tony Bose thinks.....I guess I can trust him:p
