Caly 3.5 dilemma is it real???

I won a caly 3.5 in an auction price is decent but not too good to be true. Yes yes I know buyer beware blah blah blah Anyway now I am second guessing it's authenticity. Please help. The main reason I'm suspicious is the logo on the blade looks a little suspect and the numbers on the box don't really touch the lines as I have seen in pictures of fakes.





 
If it's a fake, it's a damn scary accurate one. Do you know for a fact that fake Caly 3.5's exist? If not, the 1st thing to do is check through the Spyderco Fakes & Knock Offs Info sticky thread on this forum and the Spyderco-like Knock-offs Replicas and Fakes" sub-forum on the Spyderco Factory Forum. If you don't see any references to fake Caly 3.5's, or if they all turned out to be false alarms, then you are probably safe. If those searches turn up nothing, the you might want to browse the Aliexpress website, since they're probably the single largest purveyor of fakes, to see if they're offering fake Caly 3.5's.
 
It looks real, something hard to fake is the look of the steal of vg 10 it has a very distinct look which by the pictures that knife has.
 
I have only seen fake Caly 3's for sale, no 3.5's. The biggest tell on those is that there is no Boye dent on the lock release.
 
Good. The guy assured me it was and many messages later he's probably just about had it with me.
 
I vote real also. The VG-10 sheen is a big positive, and I also have never seen a fake 3.5. I have only seen fake 3's.
 
I will concur with the sheen of VG10 - it is not a fake. The first thing I noticed in your pictures was actually that very unique look, and how well you captured it in the photo.
 
I thought the Japanese-made Spyderco's were stamped with Seki City instead of just Japan?
 
Most of them are, but if you do an image search for the caly 3.5, all of the results I could find, including special models such as the laminated ZDP-189 and CF, had just "Japan" stamped on that portion of the blade. It must just be one of the Caly attributes.
 
I'm carrying a 3.5 G10 today and it says Japan, not Seki City. The one in the photo has the VG-10 sheen and the typical circular scratch marks on the blade near the pivot. I have seen many counterfeit 3's but never a 3.5 and the fake 3's I have seen either don't have the Boye detent or a back lock at all. Other than the clip being on the wrong side it looks legit to me. ;)

Those are knives made in Seki City. The Caly line is made in Moki though, who stamp their knives with Moki. They also have a different Spyderco stamp, which uses the curvy Y and not the straight line Y

I have all the Caly variation already thanks (except for SE versions) but I agree with you on the lamination line thing as it would be the hardest characteristic to fake. It's the easiest way to spot the fake Fallkniven IMO. The counterfeiters will still etch "Laminated VG-10" on the blade but there is no lamination line and, of course, the steel is not VG-10.
 
Well I got the knife today. Wow I really like it. It's perfect. I feel like I've found the knife I've always been searching for.
 
I'm glad to hear you got and like it. As concerningly good as some fakes are getting, the one thing that will remain truly difficult to replicate is the feel of a real quality knife. In liking this one so much, you may have variants of it in your future! I just got a Caly3.5 ZDP/CF, and it is just an amazing little-big knife. Enjoy your new piece!

You know the best way to make sure you get a real and authentic product every time?


Buy from an established online dealer that has something to lose by selling knock offs. This kind of fear is completely avoidable, yet people continue subjecting themselves to anxiety over potential fakes by trying to save a couple bucks here and there.

This x1000. It's much better to pay a few dollars more and know that you're getting the real deal.
