Caly 3.5 which steel and fakes

Been looking at the Caly 3.5. Seems to be a good choice for me, smallish size compared to other Spyderco models, I like how substantial it looks with the liners/backspacer and like the back lock.

So.....I have seen a few of the VG-10 versions for sale on the secondary market and tons of new or used ZDP-189 versions priced all over the place. I actually like the look of the simple G10 scales and don't need a super steel but the ZDP-189 does seem interesting. I am curious about fakes though......have the laminated ZDP models turned up as fakes ?

Thanks for any help. Have not owned a Spydie for a long time now

I had that question too. Couldn't get an answer in the "fakes" thread. I pulled the trigger on an eBay Caly3 zdp laminated and compared to the 3.5zdp equivelant it looks real.

I would hope the lamination is hard to fake and isn't worth doing. The two steels have slightly different colors and the gradient line on the blade could be potentially faked but you can tell looking at the blade stock thickness and the pivot it's 1 steel sandwitched between two. They would have laminate 2 lesser steels to simulate this and by going to that length it might not be worth it to produce.

I think you can see the lamination even at the spine so it seems it would be more difficult to fake than other non-laminated models and hopefully not worth the effort. Really a toss up for me on which model. I like the look of carbon fiber and the technology of laminated steels, but the G10 and un-polished blade has such a clean, simple look.

Get this knife! It's really nice when you want PM2 cutting edge and ergos that's skinny in your pocket.

It's a great office knife. On weekends I do use manix and paramilitary (2 and 3's) since the zdp DOES scratch easier due to the softer outer lamination steel. And since polished it's more noticable as well.

The single steel stock might be a better one size fits all.

And yes you can see the two steels in the spine of the blade.

This would be a user that I do not want to worry about. I hate being the first guy to scratch up any knife, silly I know but I typically always buy users then I never feel bad about diving in with them.

Why not getting Stretch 2 in ZDP? Similar blade length, full ZDP (not easily scratched), likely more hand filling& the FRN texture is comfortable and grippy.

Caveat, I have the older FRN Stretches. Like them

The Caly 3.5 simply carries better than the Stretch. The Stretch is a hunting knife and does not need to be slim. The Caly 3.5 is about the same size as the Caly3. It is super slim and easy to carry.

Unfortunately the basic G10 VG10 is discontinued. The ZDP with CF at almost twice Endura ZDP makes it harder to justify.

I'm so impressed with the caly 3.5 ztp for it's blade to handle ratio without loosing too much in ergos. I've only had it a few days. Folds down to size of regular caly 3. Makes me feelike I shouldn't of bought the Caly3.

Love my 3.5, it’s the only “regular” black G10/VG-10 knife I’ve kept and not resold. Action on that thing is bananas too, the rare backlock that’s fun to open and close. It’s a nice slab of solid steel too, I’ve lamented not springing $140 for a Superblue version back when they were new and I’ll do it again now...
