Hey guys. I was just wondering how many of you took the pivot screw out and cleaned the blade, pivot and liners. Then put a few drops of oil after reassembly and loctited. It was very gritty when i first got it and kind of stiff. Haven't really abused it too much. So my question is, how many had the same problem? Also, how are you liking it and what have you thrown at it? I realized a few days into using it that the outter 420J steel scratches so easily!

I've had 8 or 9 so far and mine have all been very smooth, new or used. I've only d/a my G10 Caly 3 after a year or so of constant use. Found nothing but a little left over lube in there so I don't take any of my Caly 3s apart anymore. I just rinse 'em under running water and dry them good. I use Tuff-Glide for a lube and it's thin enough to get back in around the pivot area without me having to take the blade out.

Once a week or so I'll use canned air and blow the innards out real good and then wipe the blade down with a Tuff Cloth. That's all mine have needed and they're my EDC knives now.

Yes, 420J does scratch more easily than some other steels. Knives are tools to me, and tools get scratched up from use. I'm kinda beat up too, after 61 years and a lot of mileage, but everything I got left still works, just like my Spydercos.

mine was like that when i got it, lots of stuff in there. no big deal i clean and oil every new knife right out of the box.

I took my blade out the 2nd day I got it. Go easy as there is loctite holding the pivot screw in place. It was clean with enough lube in the knife. What I wanted to do was to get the high spot off the tang when opening the knife. This spot was midway when opening and did not make for a smooth opening. There was that pause/high spot. A little touch-up on the belt grinder on that area of the tang followed with polishing on the leather belt and it opens like a liner lock. Now the back spring has the same lift through the complete opening cycle. Very impressed with this knife. Great for a EDC as it doesn't scare most people. If you do take the blade out and find that the screw is tight apply some heat to the pivot screw with a soldering iron to sofen the loctite and make removal a little safer. Good to cover the blade with some painters tape so you don't get cut. This sucker was sharp especially after some stroping with 0.25 liquid diamond spray. I don't think Spyderco wants you to remove the blade and what I did voids any warrenty I had. That's life. Good luck with your Caly 3 CF

I also have a high spot in my knife, but don't want to screw up the blade any. Wish i could smooth it out also!
