Caly 3 Jimping Issues?

I just received a Caly 3 which, for the most part, I love. However, there is one thing that seems very out of place to me, and I can't seem to get over it. The jimping on the thumb ramp seems to be cut too high. This makes it so the blade doesn't sit flush with the locking bar and, in my opinion, makes the knife look much more cheaply made.

So my question is: Has anyone seen this problem before?

Also: Is it even worth the effort of sending it back to Amazon (where I bought it) or to Spyderco for replacement?

Here are pics for clarification.

Knife closed. Note the long, unjimped area near the pivot.

Another view. Note how the jimping goes up higher than usual.

Lastly, this picture shows the hole between the blade and locking bar.

Normally I wouldn't care too much, but this is my first expensive knife and a graduation gift to myself. I'm not over-reacting, am I?

Mine isn't that way, it is jimped all the way down if my memory serves me.

However, I can't see it being an issue. I think your thumb should be reaching as far up the ramp as possible anyway (that's the strongest grip), and the lack of jimping shouldn't effect your grip either way.

However, if it bothers you aesthetically and you can't just live with it, you can email Spyderco W&R and I'm sure they will take care of it for you, and send a replacement.

It's up to you, I might just keep it, it depends on if you're gonna just use it or you're going to make it a safe queen.

Congrats on the knife anyway, it is one of my top 3 favorite Spyderco's.

I think their jimping machine was having a bad day, all the Caly 3's I have seen are finished flush with the lock bar.

Just pulled mine out of my pocket and compared to mine it does seem that yours is off-set toward the top of the thumb ramp by a notch. I doubt it would affect performance to any degree, but if it bothers you send it back. You have to be satisfied, not anybody else and I don't think you are being unreasonable in this instance.

Thanks for the quick responses, guys. As much as I would like to get a "perfect" Caly 3, it definitely doesn't effect performance, and I don't want to have to send it in for 3+ weeks. Can anyone comment on the speed of Spyderco's warranty service?

For what looks to be a quick, straightforward replacement, I'd guess 2-3 weeks (that's what it took when I sent one in, but that was almost a year ago). I hear it has a been a bit slower lately though, they are pretty overwhelmed, but I have always gotten excellent service from them.

I just looked at "Thecajunblaze" Caly 3 CF video out of curiousity on Youtube, and yours does appear not to be jimped correctly. I was just about to order myself one from Amazon for a fathers day gift, but I'm sure the vender has nothing to do with it. You just seem to got one that got pass inspection.

If anyone was wondering, I decided to return it for a replacement from Amazon. The new knife should be here tomorrow, so I'll let you all know how it looks.

Pmek5, I wouldn't hesitate to order one from Amazon. This is most likely a one time deal and, like you said, not a vendor issue. Plus, Amazon has just about the easiest return policy I've seen.

I just ordered one from Amazon earlier today as well, I'll take a look when it shows up. Probably just one that slid past QC, I'd guess.

So I just got the replacement in, and it also has jimping which is a bit off. Not as much as the other one, but still there, nonetheless. My plan now is to just carry it for a while and if it's still bugging me later, I'll send it to Spyderco. If anyone else has ordered one from Amazon, I would appreciate it if you could check your Caly's for me.

i ordered my caly 3 from amazon, and have no jimping issues at all, it's flush, hopefully it doesn't cause you any problems later

I thought I'd posted a reply to this thread but can't find it, so I apologize if I'm repeating myself. I ordered a Caly 3 several months ago and immediately put it in the safe. Several weeks later I decided to use it for EDC, so I took the first Caly 3 from the safe and then ordered another one as a safe queen. The second knife arrived with the jimping problems. I hope Sal will advise us on this. For you long-time collectors, is there any chance that the Caly 3 with the minor jimping problem will result in a knife that's worth more as time goes on, such as when mint mistakes are made by the mint on certain coins, or will it detract from the value? I'm loving my Caly 3 for EDC but wish I'd waited until the repacement arrived before using the first one as EDC. Oh well, it's a great knife regardless of the minor jimping problem. I'm just not sure how to proceed. Any info from experienced knife collectors will be greatly appreciated.

It is not going to be worth more because of the jimping being off. If it bothers you send it in to spyderco.

ICCW,

Since you know that one is going to be a safe queen, definitely send it in. A perfect version will be worth more than a flawed version in this case. May I ask how much your Caly 3's jimping is off? Is it like the pictures I posted, or is it to a lesser degree?

temp9, it looks very similar to yours. I guess I'll go ahead and send it in to Spyderco.

I've heard that Spyderco will only replace a knife if it's in NIB condition. If you carry it and put some use on it, I don't think they'll replace it. I'm not sure on this but I read in another thread were someone was denied replacement from Spyderco due to their knife not being in NIB condition. Something to think about if it really bothers you.
