Caly 3 question

I posed this question in another thread but received no response. The Caly 3 is such a refined design. In so many small ways you can see the thought that went into this knife over its generations. What I cannot figure out is why it has such a bulbous, protruding pivot pin. On a knife this thin it is quite noticeable, not troublesome, but definitely out of place (to my eye at least). I'm sure there is a reason, anyone know what it is?

I would like to know the answer as well, as I recently got a pinned version of the caly 3 and it seems to be just fine. I think it is one of their earlier adjustable pivots though.

The Caly 3 isn't the only Spyderco to use protruding pivot screws by a long shot, but I agree its pivot screws protrude more than most. Given that Sal designed the Caly 3, my guess is that he feels it adds something to the knife and he's probably the only one who can say whether that "something" is purely esthetic, necessary for pivot strength, or something else altogether.

I EDC Caly3/3.5 for more than six years and never noticed this. I even took it out my pocket to see what are you talking about. Agree, it is little big. never bothered me really.
