I purchased this knife the other day so I'm still in waiting on the mailman mode for it. But I got it because I've developed a distinct preferance for Spyderco's mid-locking lockback and I was looking for a smaller package than say the mini-manix. Also, I've yet to try a fully serrated pocket knife and wanted to do that.

I would be delighted to hear from the Caly 3 guys on what they think make this a special knife. Also, any comments on full serrations and what they use them for would be appreciated.

I picked mine up at the SFO purely out of luck, they were on special and I had some extra cash with me. This knife soon became an EDC Rotation favorite, silky smooth action, wicked sharp, just the right size for 90% of the cutting chores I faced.

I was traditionally carried a bigger knife, Full-size Manix, Police 3, Military...the Caly3 changed all that for me.

Great knife. When using, just forget about the serrations, use it like a plain edge, and be amazed by the performance.

+1

It is one helluva an aggressive cutter! I just dismembered a Big Screen TV from 1987 that has an ABUNDANCE of wires, used a Police 3 SE which has similar blade characteristics and my GOSH did eat EAT those wires unlike my razor sharp Scrapper 5.

Cutting wire is something I typically SAY NO 2, but WAVESTER got me a fat deal on it so I can justify WHOOPIN IT! Thanks Joe! SHE's a CUTTER!!!!

(coincidentally, I had this pic ready to be pasted from my last post in another thread)

Thanks for all the comments.
I'm fired up about this knife...comments on impressions later. g

The knife ergos for typical utility grips is superb. Steel is excellent, and I have yet to find better serrations than Spyderco's though the CRKT Veff Serrations come close.

Cuts and slices very cleanly, and the FFG blade is just the right size.

My only quibbles is that the wire clips moves slightly under hard grips, and the handle itself does not lend itself well to hammer-fist grips either forward or reverse (though that isn't really the point of the knife ;)).

any comments on full serrations and what they use them for

I always recoiled from a serrated blade for EDC, just because I did not think the blade would be very good for opening boxes, peeling apples, and all of the usual stuff that one does with a folder.

But I got a serrated Military, and found that it cuts through boxes for example better than I would have expected, and did not shred them as I had anticipated.

I could almost be convinced that I now prefer a serrated blade for EDC. I still like a killer-sharp plain edge, but a serrated edge will do the trick just fine and really cut through just about anything it encounters.

What a lovely little knife!! I still haven't had it long enough but I do like this one alot.
Funny thing about me and Spydies...I either like them a lot or just don't. There doesn't seem to be middle ground with me. Of course that's all subject to change.

I picked one of those up from Seirra Trading Post when they had them on sale. Nice knife. I also picked up a fully serrated Manix 2 to go with it.

We threw an Apple Press party yesterday. I've got 6 trees and we invited some of the neighbors with young children over to press cider. For those that don't know most of the apple juice comes from drops. So the kids picked up the drops and the adults quartered up apples and removed the bad spots.

I pressed my Caly 3 into service and everybody that used it just loved it. Interesting thing was nobody had ever heard of Spyderco before. I was really surprised by this. Anyway, a Spydie Edge rules when dicing up apples. Great fun actually.

I'm not too surprised that no one there had heard of Spyderco. How often do you see Spyderco ads in mainstream magazines or see their commercials on TV? They are a small company that is huge with the aficionado crowd, but they don't really mass-market.

I just scored an SE on the bay for super cheap. I love the PE version and look forward to an SE counterpart. You will like it.
