I got a cf zdp189 Caly 3 for Christmas, and after carrying it around I decided to post my thoughts and opinions on the knife.
Carry
The Caly 3 is a refined edc knife that any knife nut will love and that anyone can appreciate. It weighs 3oz and carries very well in pants or shirt pocket. There isn't anything new to say about the Caly's wire clip which is perfect for discreet edc carry. And when it comes time to use it no one will recoil in fear if you are worried about that. Though my friends were very careful with it after they saw it shave some hair.
Ergos
The scales are a very attractive pattern of carbon fiber and they are smooth. The lack of texture is just fine for me as i find that g10 is often too grippy to be taken in and out of the pocket frequently easily. And with the jimping and choil on the blade you dont need any traction from the scales. The knife slips right into your hand and is very comfortable despite being quite thin. You certainly dont feel like you dont have enough to hold on to. The knife really just becomes apart of your hand with out you having to think about it as your hand fall naturally in place.
Fit and finish
Exactly what you would expect from spyderco. I couldnt see anything wrong with mine or any ugly spots from machining. Other than at the pivot where the laminated blade was scratched from opening and closing.
EDC Challenge
I carried just this knife for about 2 weeks, it opened presents, whittled a walking staff and cane, cut twine, cardboard, and various other things including soda cans and bottles.
On the farm the caly 3 did very well, even had a hand in skinning a deer, then on new years it cut open roughly 100 glowsticks (we tied them to the fan and threw them all over the walls. It was pretty fun ha). The glass inside of the glowstick chipped out and dulled the edge but it cut every single one of them, and the next day I had it back to new in no time with the sharpmaker.
The blade is ffg but is thicker than the ffg delica. I sliced up some cardboard and carved wood with both of them as well as my bm 530. and there were moments when the caly was out sliced by the delica and bm but it certainly didnt have the same staying power. Also the clay3 is more versatile with its thicker stock and tip and a much better choice for all around edc. Where as I usually pair up my ffg delica with a stouter folder as back up. The is as smooth as the bm axis lock after you break it in and is the most secure lockback i have ever had. Zero play. Zero.
The caly 3 can follow you anywhere, fitting in and working well in any environment. Woods, church, party, store, work, it doesnt matter. the caly 3 is loyal and dependable. It is now the blade I reach for first knowing that it is all the knife you need. At least till the Caly 3.5 zdp cf comes out. If you like you like your delica ffg but are afraid of breaking it, this is the knife for you.
for reference purposes only
