Caly Jr is Off Center

Got my first Calypso Jr this week and love it. It was new old stock and has the black frn handle. Since it was the last one, I took it without much inspection. Problem is, when the blade is closed, it isn't centered and actually rests against the non-clip side of the groove. Doesn't seem to effect the action but looks funny. Any ideas? ft

That's really common with the black-handled FRN Calypso Jr. The blades got warped during heat treatment, IIRC. I think Spyderco was still learning about VG-10. If it doesn't affect the performance of the knife, I wouldn't worry about it.

I have the black as well as the grey frn and they are both off center. It doesn't affect anything at all, just a little off center.

I have 2 calypso jrs, both were perfectly centered when I recieved them.

UNTIL I made the mistake of taking off the clip & putting it back on, somehow tightening the screws effect the centering.

unfortunatly, I was unable to get the one back to center, but after switching the clip to the other side & really tightening screws, then switching the clip back to right hand carry & very carefully got the screws just barely holding the clip with no movement that I was able to get the blade off the side of the handle.

My Full sized calypso (micarta handle) is also off center & the clip screws effect the tension of the blade opening as well.

Thanks for the ideas. I tried removing the clip/screws and switching sides but no luck. I think Cerulean is right, I used a straight edge and found the blade is warped. I normally don't care too much about this stuff but it's scraping the side pretty good. ft

If the blade is actually scraping against the inside of the handle, I'd send it back to Spyderco.

I agree. If it was just off center and not touching anything then just use the hell out of it but a blade so off of center to be rubbing is sufficient for me to return the knife for warranty work.

mine's off-center too. doesn't rub the scale, but comes within a hair's breadth. if yours is opening and closing nicely, i would just keep it and use it, despite a little light rubbing (if it is indeed light).

i got a bunch of knives and none are this far off. i'm gonna send it back for rework. thanks for all the help. fish

Just a quick update...

Sent the Caly back for rework and got it's replacement today. Warranty and Repair enclosed a nice note and a new Caly (grey...very nice!). I really appreciate a company that stands behind their products.

Nice job Spyderco, you can expect more purchases from me in the future! ft
