caly jr zdp

IF you can find one....buy it. Most sites are out of stock and supposedly Spyderco is making and shipping NO more. They were available thru internet shops for around $ 70.

It is a mean, cutting machine and holds its razor edge longer than any knife I own.

Do a SEARCH and you'll find lots of raves in this forum on this knife.

newgraham was selling 50 ZDP-Calys per day. That should be food for thought. I sharpened mine for the first time yesterday (really sharpening on some stones with tender loving care). All I can say is: ZDP is GOOOOOD stuff. Takes an edge like a HC steel. Beautiful!

All I had to do to mine was strop it a few times and it was right back to where it was when I got it. It is quite a precision little whittler and I've been carrying it on and off. It is hard to deny a knife this great pocket time. Even if it is tip down carry only. I will probably be changing that in time to tip up.

With all this demand they will be around for a while, IMHO. It would be crazy not to keep making and selling them if they are this popular.

DAMMIT, I HAVE TO BUY ONE! So low on cash...

Oh well I know where a secret stash is and I doubt they sell very many knives....

I sharpened mine again last night, I had to regrind it after some really harsh use (cutting sods and the like), after a profile with SiC, then AO, I finished with a really soft chinese waterstone and some CrO, I can't see how anyone would have a problem sharpening this steel.

I don't know if the demand is that big. Sal could tell us, but I'm thinking this was a limited run and they are quickly being bought up by all us knife nuts. Newgraham selling 50 a day is nothing if Spyderco is selling hundreds or thousands of their other knives across the country on a daily basis.

I think the ZDP-Caly is pretty nice looking. The colors are unique and it maybe something I find myself carrying more than my other knives just because it maybe more sheeple friendly.

Is it really that much better than the last one thay made?

Will, the steel has a higher hardness and apparently a higher wear resistance and a higher stain resistance (at least the 420J2 part) to the last CJ produced.

Honestly the only thing I don't like about the knife is the color. I mean I can live with it but it is a color that I always think of as a feminine color. When I sold dental equipment the woman dentists were the ones always buying the mauve chair upholstery as well as other trendy colors so that is probably why. But IMO this ZDP189 CJ is also closer to pink to my eyes than it is to red so that is a big part of it too for me. Even my wife said the first time she saw it that it was a good knife for women because it was cute and it was a 'pretty' color.

Thanks,

I ask because I have been tempted to get one for a while, and I can get an old one (new) for $40, or (while they last) this one $65. Big jump in price...

If you can, I recommend you get one. It's the sharpest knife I've gotten out of the box. From all accounts appears it will stay that way for quite a while too. For me, extra $25 is worth it.
