I'm thinking about trying a Caly 3.5, but I've never had a folder that did not use washes of some kind in the pivot. I've read about overly tight feel to the pivot when tightened to the point where there is no blade play, or blade wobble if the pivot is loose enough to be smooth. I know that people often complain about a knife's feel out of the box and don't take the time to break/wear it in properly.

Can the Caly 3.5 be a smooth knife, with no bladeplay, after being properly lubricated and broken in?

I'm not worried at all about the pinned construction, the last time I disassembled a lockback I regretted it and won't be attempting that anytime soon :D
 
Drop of oil ,Couple hours watching TV opening and closing and my new 3.5 is like butter. Just needs some use and it will get real smooth.
 
My Caly 3 and kopa are my only spydies without washers and they're as smooth as any other. If you like lockbacks im sure you will be happy with one. They're great knives.
 
I have a total of six (one each 3 and 3.5 in ZDP-189, VG-10 and Super Blue). They're all snug but smooth. There have been some reports of some that were gritty, but this seems to be easily flushed and cleaned out.
 
When I decided on folders to give to my three nephews and brother, I chose three Caly 3's in ZDP and one (for bro) in SuperBlue.
I did carry a Caly 3 in VG-10 for several yrs in an office environment, but is not my first choice of blade-steel in that model.
