I just though I would share some of my humble photos of my latest Spyderco.

Caly3

Anybody have any idea what the speckling is on the G10 around the pivot screw? I'm thinking it's just oil from the manufacturing process.

Nice pictures. I love the Caly 3. I'd say try a little warm soapy water and see if those marks/stains will come off, but you might want to wait and see if anybody has a better idea.

I'm hesitant to do that because the knife is pinned together, i.e. I can't take it apart in order to allow it to dry properly. I'm hoping it will just wear away on it's own. I'm not to concerned about it as this is definitely going to be one of my users!

Nice photos, I noticed some discoloration on a few of my g10 knives, thought it was just from use?

Did you snag this from the sale forum? some good prices ;]

I have that discoloration on one of my Caly 3 models. I returned it to the seller and they exchanged it for a replacement with the same problem.

After much fiddle-farting around on my part about what to do, I returned it to Spyderco to see what they say.

Tried soap and water - it didn't put much of a dent in the staining.

I have another Caly 3 that I bought about a month back as a factory second. It, too, has the staining. That's the only thing I can find wrong with the knife - may have been why it is a second.

I will let you know what Spyderco says once I hear back from them.

I ordered a spare Caly 3 about 2 months ago when I heard they were on the disco list. It came in with this oil staining also. Sent it back to the Shoppe for a exchange and received another stained Caly. I tried clean with soap and water with no result. Gave up and put it in the safe. My staining is concentrated around the pivot screw and the clip screw.

Are these stained Calys the ZDP or the discontinued VG10 model (or both)?

Let me know what they say only because I'm interested in what's causing this odd discoloration. I'm not to concerned about it as it doesn't impede against the function of the knife.

From what I understand - it's just the VG10 Calys.

Great photographs, love the close ups!

I would imagine the discoloration to be residue left over from the manufacturing, hot water & bicarbonate of soda* have an effect?

Both of my G10 Caly3s came with the same stain around the pivot screw. It's pretty much disappeared from my user after about a month or two and that's just from carrying it daily. I didn't wash it or anything. I assumed it's just the lubricant and it'll wear away eventually.

So you take apart a knife any time you wash it? I wash my EDC knives all the time to clean them. A lot of times every few days I will wash my main knife. I don't even normally use hot water or blow them out, I just let them dry over night. You aren't going to have a rust problem. It is stainless steel after all. Heck I have even done it to a carbon slip joint and haven't had a problem.

If you are that worried about it hit it with a quick spray of WD40. WD stands for water displacer and is meant to drive out any water and replace it with a very light oil. It's not a lubricant.

Mine arrived yesterday... no staining. BUT, mine had a boat load of red loctite in the pivot screw hole and I'm wondering if the staining you all are referring to is related to excess loctite drying on the scales.

Oh okay, I see what you mean now. My problem is that I have a massive fear of rust occuring on my expensive blades. :o I'll probably just see if it wears of on it's own after about a month or so - hopefully I'll get lucky.

Just got mine a few weeks ago and it is stained too. But not just around the pivot... it is all around the inside perimeter of the scales but seems to be more prominant around pins and screws. So I doubt it is loctite. I think it is just oil/lubrication bleeding through the very thin G10. It is less visible evry day I use it and add my own natural body oil and grime to the handle.

Other than that, this is my favourite knife. Wish I could justify buying another before they all go bye-bye.
