Last year I bought a C52BMP .Is this knife called the Experiment or Calypso? My box says Experiment. Mine is Micarta with flat grind. I've seen adds showing the flat grind called the Experiment and the all steel hollow ground called the Calypso. Are they all called the Calyso now? This is the best cutting knife I own!! Thanks.

Hi Scott,
The Calypso Jr. (micarta) that I just got in the mail last week says the same thing.

As I recall, the Calypsos were an "experimental" model before they worked their way up to having actual part numbers and names in Spyderco's lineup. I wonder if someone found a box of earlier-production Calypsos from before the name change??

I agree about how well it cuts! The Calypso is my gold standard for certain kinds of cutting jobs. It cuts well, and does it with class!

In my opinion the early Calypso Jr's may be better than the later, production versions. Mine which was designated Experimental has a steel tube lining the thong hole. I've noticed from pictures in rags and on the net that most of them don't seem to have lined thong holes. I think it is a classy touch and I'm glad mine has it. I don't think it would effect performance at all.

I thought the whole "Experimental" idea came about as a way to test small batchs of new designs without giving numbers and names. The Calypso experiment seems to be a good one!

My box says experimental also. The edges on the micarta are not perfect; they look like they were done by hand. It's my favorite Spyderco. After reading this thread, I wish I had carried it today.

I also noticed that the edges of the micarta have a dull look to them. Well, I was a little bored this weekend so I took some metal polish paste and rubbed an area on the edge of the micarta. It took on a smooth shine and now it almost matches the finish on the top of the scales! It makes this nice looking knife look even better! When I get the time I'll work my way polishing all the way around the edges to give it a really finished look. At first I wasn't all that excited about this knife, but now it's beginning to really grow on me.

The micarta "polishes" up pretty well just from carrying in the pocket and using it with sometimes sweaty and oily hands. I would love to have a version of this knife with G-10 scales. I'll definitely get a zytel one though and that should also be more textured. I don't know why I worry about slippage since it hasn't slipped in my hand once due to that nice choil. I'll just have to see if I can't get one of the BF Natives I guess.

I'll have to look at my box, too! I recently traded a Viele for a Calypso. Mine has all the features of a handmade knife )a bit of roughness on the blade choil, some uneveness in the scales, and the steel lined lanyard hole). It is the sharpest knife I have ever touched, bar none! I think mine has a flat grind, though, as far as I can tell. I'll have to check the box directly tomorrow...

Steve,
It's the flat grind and nice taper on the Calypso Jr BM that makes me like it so much. I tried talking Chris Reeve Knives into making a flat ground Sebenza model but they seem to love the hollow grind (I don't mind their hollow grind too much as it very shallow). My dream knife would be a BG-42 Sebenza, flat ground blade, with a Spyderco hole, and a clip of course. I'm drooling all over the keyboard just picturing it in my head. I guess I'll just have to keep dreaming or start making knives!
